My sisters "friend" had a cold then he started to get congested in his lungs...instead of going to the doctor he pulled the "tough it out" card and finally 2 weeks into it went to his doc. He was put on antibiotics and cough syrup with codine....then he started to pass out when he coughed, back to doc, off work now for another week, his doc sent him to lung specialist who took him off work ANOTHER 2 weeks, and gave more meds....he is still passing out when he coughs.

Today he sees his doc again, still passing out but not as much its only 2-5 times a day instead of 12 plus times a day.

IF you get a cold and it fails to go away in the normal time frame, gets worse, you develop congestion, coughing fits.......GO TO THE DOCTOR!

I know this is unusual BUT just cuz we dont wanna miss work, appear weak or whatever WE have to use common sense and TAKE CARE of ourselves.

Take it from experience-back in 2000 my husband at the time got sick,he went back and forth to the doctors, could be this and could be that crap, early 2001 he got very sick, missed alot of work,we got behind on morgage, car payments etc.In the middle of august we decided to file bankruptcy,3 weeks later he was in the hospital,he went from talking and eating the first day to the very next day on life support and in a coma, doctors said it was a bacterial infection that went through his blood stream and started shutting everything down,UNFORTUNATELY this next part was worse.I was informed on the morning of 9-11-01 there was nothing more the doctors could do,he was already gone. The night of 9-11-01 I(god forgive me)had to make the decision to terminate life support which is the worse thing in life for someone to have to do.He passed away in my arms and with his daughters ages 12 and 18 at the time by his side.So believe me you dont realize what a germ can do until its to late, material things can be replaced, someone you love deeply cant.

Good advice. Especially with the new flu in the news. Anything that gets in the lungs is worse the older we get.

I to have played the tough it out part, coughing sneezing , thinking its only a cold, then felt like someone sitting on my chest and couldnt breath all that great, finally went to a dr, found out i had a bad case of bronchitis almost into pneumonia, and being short of breath with that and coughing i almost passed out a few times, funny thing was getting bronchitis in the middle of a hot summer, i was told it started from allergies, so yea beware, quit playing the tough guy.

I ended up going into the hospital on May 22 of this year and not returning to work until June 22.

Got hospitalized for a week with double pnuemonia and the docs actually told my wife that I might not make it through the first few days.

Got back to the house in the big truck and passed out in the living room after walking through the door. Wife was at work. When she came home she woke me up. I looked in the mirror and my lips had started to turn blue from lack of oxygen.

Had 85% full of fluid in my left lung and 40% in my right.

But I didn't even have a cough. I just started sleeping more and more and started getting really tired easily. Felt like I had a minor cold. Took some Alka-Seltzer cold in the mornings and felt O.K.

Yep, I know exactly what you mean. That one completely snuck up on me and caught me off guard.

Keep healthy and if you feel sick go to the doctor and get it fixed.

A few years ago I had whooping cough. I was stubborn and didn't want to go to the doctor, it was just a little cough, I would bounce right back, etc. My lips were turning blue when I coughed I guess. Got treated, out of work for a week, but the cough would take a while to completely heal I was told. 6 weeks later, came down with pneumonia over Memorial weekend. Very sudden. Was fine one day, went to my sister's graduation, and the next day woke up and thought I was either dead or going to die. Didn't mess around that time and went straight to the doctor. It took me about a year to completely recover from that mess and get my strength back.

    I'm sorry for your loss!

This is a good place to insert a reminder to talk out with your family your personal wishes in a time like this. My wife and I've had the talk about being a vegetable on life support. My personal opinion for me is that when the DRs say its over to pull the plug and donate any thing of value to other folks that still have a fighting chance.

I had double pneumonia when I was a kid, 4/5 age. Dr told my parents if I ever get it again it'll kill me. 30 yrs later no problems yet.

thank you Brickman. It was a very tough life experience and believe me I look at life alot different now, thats why alot of my my posts are cherish the ones you have, dont fight over stupid stuff, and never go to bed mad at each other because one day that person will no longer be there and believe me it will hurt...I had it all once-the luxurys and material things-but in all do honesty if i could have traded it all in to have him back and live in a beat up shack in the woods i would do it..Life is the most precious thing in the world and it cannot be replaced.

Thats tough man. I've had pneumonia 4 times now because of scaring in my lungs from when I got it as a little one. Put me in the ER every time. With all the crap floating around these days, playing the tough guy doesn't work so well anymore. I tried it awhile back and ended up fighting off a bad round of lyme disease. :biggrin_25513:
