Please, tell me what I did wrong?

Honestly, folks, I am looking for CONSTRUCTIVE criticism here. I don't believe I did anything wrong, but maybe I did, so please tell me, if you see anything I did wrong. I will try my darndest to be as objective as possible, but since I am in the middle, it may be impossible to be completely objective. That's why I ask for input. Maybe I did do something wrong, and deserve this. I just cannot see it.
I went off in June for some minor surgery, that the doc said should be 4-7 days off work. I told my dispatch about it, and said I expected to need a week, or so off work. Well, a few things went wrong in the surgery, and I got an infection, which led to another infection, and subsequently led to a third and fourth infection. After 6 weeks (all the while I kept my employer informed as to my medical condition, with medical off work orders, just not my specific diagnosis) I was given the "All Clear" to return to work with NO restrictions, and turned in that paperwork, to my employer. I was given a specific date on which I was permitted to return to work, by my surgeon, and notified my employer that I would be ready to return to work THAT day.
Well, the freight was slow in my area, so I wound up sitting for a week at home, after being released, before being dispatched out. I got 1 load that ran me regional, then went to the next pickup, and ran cross-country, picked up a third and headed back cross country, but still 1200 miles from home, and by now 2 weeks out. On the way to that consignee, I get a call from my terminal manager, asking where my return to work form was. I told him I turned it in, directly to my dispatcher. He checked with her, and called me back, saying that that was not the return to work form he needed, I needed to have a company form filled out by my doctor, and since I was already back to work, it was urgent to get it done immediately. After jumping through several hoops to try to get this done, I finally got my doctor's nurse to accept a faxed copy of the form, and have the doc fill it out, to satisfy the company's requirement.
This process took several days, as, typically, doctors are busy, and paperwork tends to take a bit of time to get done.
Once the company had the paperwork, THEN they decided I needed a return to work DOT physical and drug screen, and that I couldn't do anymore work, until I had completed both, and passed both, even though I had a valid medical card. Now, near 3 weeks since I actually returned to work.
I took the drug screen, late on Thursday afternoon, and went back to the doc Friday morning, for the physical, which I passed, no problems. I called in for my dispatch, and was told they couldn't dispatch me until the results of the drug screen came back okay. They expected them Friday, sometime. Nothing came in Friday, so I am sitting until Monday (It took a lot of arguing to get them to allow me to move to a truckstop, where I at least had a restaurant, restroom and shower facility, instead of a parking lot of a medical facility, which was closed on the weekend).
This scenario left me out of the loop for a load home, to get me there in time for a medical re-check from the surgery, and another important doctor's appointment, unrelated, for which I have been waiting 5-6 months. I would have had to load Sunday morning, for delivery Wednesday. I am 2000 miles from home and the appointments are Thursday and Friday. I was told that IF I pass the drug screen, which I have no doubts about passing, I should be dispatched out Tuesday, for a Friday delivery, near home, which leaves me unavailable for both of these doctor's appointments.
In speaking to my dispatcher, about this, Friday, she treated me like I was at fault, even though the terminal manager admitted this was his SNAFU, for not knowing what was required for me to return to work. Nor did she know what was needed. I turned in everything I was asked for, and I would have been MORE than happy to fill out their forms and take both the physical and the drug screen, during that week I waited for a dispatch out of the house, when it would have been infinitely more convenient for both the company, AND me. I even suggested to them to allow me to pee in the cup, then go home, for their physical, while on my time at home. Instead, I sit, 2000 miles from home, in a truckstop, doing nothing, but playing with my computer, and ham radios, NOT GETTING PAID, ZERO COMPENSATION, for 5 days, all because they screwed up and didn't send me for my physical and drug screen, before I left home, which was what THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO DO.

Besides going to work for a REALLY, REALLY, CHEAP, outfit like this one, just what did I do wrong, to be treated as though I am some sort of criminal? Not allowed to drive, even to go to a motel, for the 5 days off. :biggrin_25510:
Please give me some constructive criticism.
Am I justified in being angry?

well it sounds to like the number one thing you did wrong was to get sick in the first place and be unavailable for dispatch. most of these trucking companies wind up having somebodies brother in law working in dispatch, usually because he is unqualified to do anything else. that individual usually gets pissy when he cannot control every aspect of a drivers life and they find pretty ways to seek their revenge on drivers
your best bet is to find another company and to make sure this one knows exactly why you are leaving

Well Doc, I can't find anything to criticize on YOUR part here. Constructive or otherwise. And I don't blame you for being pissed. Have you talked with your terminal manager about this?

It looks to me like goose is right on with his post here.

I could tell a similar story (although the causes weren't medical). I won't because it's well known on this board who I work for, and I don't disparage current employers in public places.

    I feel for you man.

You didn't do anything wrong. You just had to pay for someone elses screw up. It is normal to send a driver for a new physical and drug screen after a leave of absence. You would not have known that. But the management should have. Good luck to you. Hopefully it will be all straightened out tomorrow.

Sorry there are very few truckers in the unions, because we as truckers can't stand together.

I'm still waiting for a shutdown to happen like they do in Europe, all trucks stop working.

The current medical card expired once you had the surgury as you were no longer medically qualified to drive.

Regarding the return to duty pee test, it wasn't called for provided you were still in the random program at work. Now if you were removed from the random porogram for more than 30 days, then a new pre-employment drug test would be warranted.

    Be safe.

I agree. Not only did I specifically dance around the specifics of where this all occurred, I purposely left out who I work for, as I do not burn bridges. But, yeah, I feel as though they burned one with me. I am done with these jerks.

Yes, the terminal manager is the one whom I have been dealing with, on this issue from the start (once they realized THEY screwed up).
    Thanks!
