I'm a tanker driver for a major carrier I'm a OTR driver so I'm everywhere. Here's my question I see tons of lease operators everyday seem like more than company drivers at times. Are there any happy lease operators out there ? I know you may not be making as much as you once could out here. But can you at make 60,70, or 80k take home money in a year ? I had plenty of local jobs driver and non driving most people nowadays are making around 30 to 40k a year. So if you are business savvy and a risk taker then leasing might not be bad for you. People come from different countries all the time and turn what we see as a losing situation into a goldmine with alot of hard work. I really don't wanna here from the whinners just the hard workers thats doing ok out here or better than ok. Cause some of us were spoiled on the old days of trucking.
Any successful or happy lease operators out there ?

Hubby has been a L/P with his current company since 2006. Our truck is about 2 years away from being paid off. I know that seems like a long time. But we make decent money, as long as we don't go home very often, or take much time off.
He is very happy with this, and we are currently looking into getting a loan from our bank to pay off the rest of what we owe on this truck. (smaller payments to the bank) After that, we can get our own authority, and make as much, or as little, as we choose.

There are a handful of lease-purchase operators blogging or tweeting about their experience but this site discourages outside links. I would suggest using a search engine like Google to research as much as possible before taking the leap at a LP plan. Searches like "lease purchase blog" or "lease purchase journal" or similar should give you some starting points. OOIDA's website used to have a section covering LP information but I haven't been over that way in a while.
Good luck,

I got my CDL through CRST, and my trainer was an owner-op who had a truck that he originally lease purchased through the company. He was happy about the whole situation, but what bothered me was how he knew that he paid $50,000 for a truck that was worth $10,000, and didnt have a problem with it.
So I guess there are.He doesn't have the internet so you won't be hearing directly from him...he's 60 and hates computers. *Shrug*

NOW MY FRIEND YOUR A TRUCK DRIVER AND A TANKER YANKER , when you talk to another driver what do you heare, for the most part woe is me and gloom and doom and for the most part it is just talk. why because they have to much time on there hands.
i for one im happy with what i do and i have 5 tractors and trailers and about to buy number 6 and yes i do very well. and further more i would never discourage anyone from becoming an owner operator if you take care of business and keep your over head down you can do very well and as a matter of fact most that have lost there trucks and went out of business are those that just had to have that new truck , with the high payments overhead will kill you quicker then anything else.
does it makes sense to you to buy a 150.000 dollor truck and put a 2000.00 load on it and expect to pay a 3000.00 dollor payment , not to me and today a used truck is just as good as a new one and makes you a whole lot more money every one of my old trucks that these high dollor driver say is no good turn and burn every week and i cry all the way to the bank.
now pre 1980 to buy a used truck was taking a chance today trucks have changed not the same the have changed radically ther good trucks and the dont cost 150.000 all my trucks are payed for along with the trailers and the newest none is a 1990 model and the one im buying is a pete for 7000.00. keep the overhead low and you can do just fine .
best of luck to you.-----southernprideRockyWI, topideas, simplyred1962 and 1 other person Thank this. -
