Vietnam was having lots of trouble with pirates robbing and killing their fishermen and merchant seaman.
President Duterte told the President of Vietnam, to chase the pirates into Philippine waters and he will have his men rip their guts out and feed them to the sharks. He said, "Be sure to radio us ahead of time so we'll be ready."

It was much different when Marcos was President.
    Marcos and Duterte total opposites.
Do you remember when Emelda Marcos had 2000 pair of shoes in her house?

Yes. I'd live there without hesitation.
Several drivers that post on here have homes there.
Two of my friends go there often and one has a wife there and the other a fiancée there.

I spent most of 2017-2018 there at home with my wife. Shes from Iloilo and everybody seems to really like the president despite the media being after him since he got elected. I was there when the drug dealers were all getting capped a couple years ago and everyone there was all for it.

Things don't happen there like they do here in the US and unless your wife's family is 100% on your side you will really have to be careful everywhere you go and everyone you hang around with because you are a millionaire in that country. Reality means nothing, you are a millionaire and that's just how it is. Luckily for me my wife's family isn't like that but make no mistake, everybody else is thinking that when they see a foreigner especially one from the US.

I am glad that we are here driving around in a truck right now but there might be a day soon where I'd be thinking that we're probably better off there. In the Philippines we have dozens of banana trees and papaya trees and a few mango trees, all in the yard fenced in. Walk down the road and you can fish in the ocean for free food. You can buy a bag full of scallops for 40 cents

In the US? Nope, we'd be kinda screwed if the zombies start feeling a little bit hungry.

I have found that if you threat the Filipino's with respect they will leave you alone.
Not respecting them, specially like i'm the big rich white and you are the stupid small pinoy..............not a smart move.

And when they are as drunk as a skunk..........stay far away.

But been allover ,even Mindanoa,no problem.
Just use common sense like you would in the USA.

This has largely been my experience as well. I spend the majority of my time there in my wife’s barangy with her family and neighbors and rarely ever see any expats. Even when we travel often we go to lesser known places that are not as popular with expats and I like it that way. As a matter of fact I have been invited into total strangers homes to eat with them several times. Often these people have very little but still are willing to share. The times that I have taken them up on their offer have been very good experiences. Filipino people are some of the best on earth in most cases.

Sure there is the occasional scammer who will try to overcharge the Kano, and you must maintain situational awareness but it is for the right people a wonderful place to visit and to live. If not for needing to make a living I would never return to the us.

I've always heard from Navy vets that if you run from the Filipino police they just shoot you.

When I was in the Navy, spent lots of time there and don't recall any sailor having any problems with the police. In fact, they seemed to like the sailors and would protect the naïve ones from shady situations, such as getting into a Jeepney with civilian men instead of with another sailor or alone.
