Hello all on the forum here. Before I posted this i did use the search function, but found nothing. I apologize if I simply missed it. To that point, I was wondering if there happened to be any School's/Companies that would be good to look at over in New York? I live in sunny California, but would have no problem moving to New York, as I have family and friends there. Anyway, any help/info is appreciated. Have a great day!

Well, I would be in the Dundee area, and I believe Rochester is the next closest town. If I remember correctly, New York city isn't too far off.

To be honest about my expectations/reasons for it. the main thing is, I'd like to make more money, and support my family. I've been downsized twice from two separate companies. Both laid off over half of there workforce. As for expectations, well, I grew up on movies like Convoy and Smokey and the Bandit. I grew up listening to my step-fathers (may he R.I.P.) stories, and I love those rigs. Anytime I see one, I just think they look great and that driving them must be awesome.

That in mind, I'm glad I found this site and forums. It's a virtual cornucopia of information. After reading allot of the post's on here, I lowered allot, and the wishful thinking that I would be making loads and getting rich were gone. But if making $50k a year is average, I can live with that, considering I was making only $15k a year. That would be ok, and I could live with that. I also don't expect that much to be in the first year, either.

I know the economy is bad, and I know that jobs/hours are getting scarce at the moment, and will probably be that way for a time. But I also know that once everything gets up and going again, that everything, including the trucking industry, will pick up again, and I figured it would be better to start around now, getting trained, and if possible some OTR expiriance.

I forgot to mention in the first post, and I should have but New Mexico is an option as well. The Los Lunas/Albuquerque area.

Theres that big PTDI school in Syracase, The National Tractor Trailer School, carries a hefty fee for CDL but has that PTDI verification thing that some companies like and maybe better your chances to get hired.. They had a radio ad, looked them up on web when I was searching for cdl schools

Did you ever wind up at that school? I'm thinking of going in October, just applied for student aid.......and yes it seems pricey about 13grand with lodging, hopefuly grants and or loans will defer some cost.

I went to NTTS way back when it was only 7 grand to attend. I would definitely recommend them, even though the cost may seem prohibitive. If you get a good job it wont take long to pay off the student loans. If your friends are reasonably close I would see about staying with them and save a lot on board. I think they make most of their money on housing, but back then they crammed five guys into a two bedroom apartment. I don't think they do that anymore.

I am not sure about the schools, but look into a bigger company that has tuition reimbursement. You could get that money back.

    Good luck!

a friend of mine and I are trying very hard to get into this school. Right now our stumbling block at the moment is WIA grant money. We have to get the school on the list of CT providers. NY has out of state schools on their list. At first CT said I could only get the WIA grant in CT and only use it in CT.
the WIA grant is for displaced workers that have no chance of being recalled. My company went out of business and my friends job was sent overseas and outsourced.
the school also told me, at first, I MADE TOO MUCH MONEY to get student aid, I'm on UNEMPLOYMENT! but they are working on getting around that.
