California reminds me of something sorta like my Grandmother used to say when we came to visit. I love getting there, and I love leaving there! I always wash the rig b4 entering, and boy do I now love PrePass, but others are right, you do need to know and obey the rules like it is a foreign country, and I'm real glad I don't live or pay taxes there.

haha, i used to agree with washing it before going to ca. but then first time i decide to wash the truck and trl, out of my own pocket, ( im a company driver ) i get the red light on my prepass, cross the scale to discover i was 7 inches over on the bridge, inspecting officer was awesome, told me just to slide em up 2 holes and ill be good, told him thanks, and have a good day, then he said " But since your here "
haha, level 1, passed, yellow sticker on the windshield. at the end thanked me for having the truck just cleaned, he didnt get very dirty at all haha.

Split speed limits. Elitist attitude. Inconsistent enforcement. Arcane regulations. Commercial vehicles are targeted as a revenue source more there than nearly any state. Cal. is the epiphany of the well meaning becoming oppressors.

My hate for Kalifornia started when I was pulling a refer out of there consistently. Granted things were different a decade ago but, it's the kinda thing that sticks with you. On the other hand, when ya get north of Woodland or so, things are pretty decent.

KaBar I've had CHP pass me on the Grapevine with my 4 ways on and he didn't pull me over. The way I understand the law it was to warn others of a hazard and it would take a really dumb CHP not to realize a truck going uphill slow isn't a hazard. I agree the split speed limits are dangerous. There are only 3 areas in Calif. a driver really has to watch their P's and Q's. L.A. area, San Francisco, and the Sacremento/Stockton area. The first two are self explantory and the Sacremento/Stockton area is the where they have the CHP Academy. The rest of the state is ok as long as the driver isn't being stupid.

i dont think split speed limts are really an issue, ill run 65 in a lot of areas while other trucks are passing me like im hardly moving, i recently spent just about 70 days out in cali, and i only saw just one truck on the shoulder with a chp behind him, iv seen more trucks pulled over in va and wy then cal. in the la area, going with the flow of traffic, when its actually moving is more safe then us running 55. Sacremento is where i seen the 1 truck pulled over. cars cutting off trucks does not just happen in calif, ever drive in Philadelphia, or boston, or I95 from va all the way up to new hampshire? NY inspects more trucks then calif. i ran ny state my first 9 months of driving, and was givin levels 1 and 2 weekly, sometimes 3 times a week, i just happen to be the single truck running throu the inspection station most of the time, but regardless, iv seen more trucks parked with creepers under them in ny then i have in cal.

I run 60 - 62 and never have been bothered, generally there isn't a problem with the split speed limits. Taxes are insane in CA, I have an '07 Silverado, last year it cost me $423 to register it for one year, this year it doubled and will now cost me $850 to register my truck for one year. Our roads are horrible, especially in the right lanes. CalTrans is as horrible a government department as I have seen and they like to fix sections of road that aren't that bad. On top of that, they shut down a lane for 5 miles on a 4 lane road to work on a 100 yard section so it slows up traffic. They also like to play "Guess the supervisor" while 5 guys stand and watch 1 guy work. Sacramento is ok, it's where I live and traffic isn't too bad, there are scales on the east side on I-80 at Antelope, it only seems to be open in the AM. There are only 2 rest areas between Sacramento and the Nevada state line on I-80, they always have one or the other shut down for this or that, they are barely ever both open. The one really good thing is if you don't like driving on rainy days, we don't get a cloud for 8 months out of the year. =)

I've seen this everywhere in the country. Apparently, all road work requires massive amounts of supervision, so as to ensure that the work is done wrong.

ha like the fire truck sitting in the sink hole today.... that was crazy, the whole front end was under water, lucky they all were able to get out of that truck with no major problems.

soon2betrucking, I am glad you cleared up all my misconceptions. While I won't try to go to Cali more. (just out of habit) At least I will know that my concerns are without proper foundation.

Let me defend Ca. since I lived there most of my life (now live in Az). Remember, Ca is hugh, both geographicaly and population wise. For some odd reason, all large population cities/states always seem to be lacking in revenue and have a tax on everything.

The CHP are fair, they aren't dummies, they know their stuff. If you are busted in Ca. by the CHP, you deserved it. There could be an exception now and then. (cops have bad days too). Any dealings I've had with the CHP have always been more than fair. There are a lot of tree huggers in Ca. who want to save the environment from human beings. That's just the way it is. Save the environment, keep the air clean, leave no trash behind in the forests/lakes/beaches/rivers/mountains etc. Now, take a look at Philly, NYC, parts of Jersey, Chicago, Detroit and other cities. Boarded up decaying buildings, graffiti up the ying yang, junk cars stripped sitting in streets, Smoke belching from factories. Can you say disgusting? I'll take Ca. anyday.

I mean, just look, the beautiful ocean, the Sierras, lakes, rivers, flowers, blue skies, beautiful weather, no humidity, movie star Govenors. Ca. has it all. Yeaaaaaaaah......:smt065
