Talked To Driver Solutions

I urge caution when going this route, my friend. This actually the route I was going to take back in Feburary when I first started looking into truck driving. I found an ad online that said USA Trucking wuld pay for my schooling and give me a job after I passed. This sounded really great. Then after doing some checking around, and some reading on this board, I figured it wasn't such a great idea after all.

One of the biggest issues is the contract. This says that USA Trucking will pay for your schooling thru Drivers Solutions on condition that after completing the course, you agree to drive for USA Trucking for the term of one year. Sounds fair enough. And how hard could it be to drive for a company for at least a year? The thing is, they know they have you over a barrel and will use you for every crap job they have. It's what they call slave labor, and it's exactly what you'll be. If you quit for any reason (or if they fire you) before your one year is up, you will be responsible for the full amount. If you quit ONE day before your one year is up, you are responsible for the FULL amount, as much as $6000. That doesn't sound very good at all.

Don't get me wrong here. I think USA Trucking is not a bad company in itself. They are actually in my top 5 list and I do have a pre-hire from them. I just think this contract deal is EVIL, whether it be thru USA or any of the other similar companies.

Also, Drivers Solutions is not a school. They are an agent that acts between the trucking company and the school, in this case USA Trucking and, most likely, C1. I don't know where you were looking to go, but in my case the C1 school I would have gone to for USA was in Indianapolis. There are some threads on here about this school, I will leave it at that.

I can understand your frustrations with delays in getting started. I first started looking into this in Feburary of this year, I didn't start school until August 3 and just graduated last friday. Sometimes you just gotta be patient to find the right school.

 

You wont "Hire in at more money" but you wont have that 6k to pay back if your plan falls through, you might as well take the state up on their (or our plan as Im a tax payer) 15 day school offer and then just apply directly at USA.com. I have heard once you apply through Drivers Solutions, that Pam and USA will not touch you for so many months due to a contract they share....in other words you must go through the Drivers Soultions route once you submit an application to them. I would just play dumb on that , and maybe the USA one will be processed first. TN is a good hiring lane for USA and I know they have atleast one trainer in the Nashville area, which would help on home time.

 

Sounds like you're on the right track. With your past experience, the three week school may be more like a refresher for you. For your situation, that might be alright. For me, the 5 week course of the school I attended worked pretty well. I would hate to see the 5 weeks of training stuffed into 3 weeks.

Jonny is right, the only way you would get hired in at a higher rate would be to have verifiable recent experience.

Keep us posted on what you find out tomorrow. Like I said, USA is in my top 5. With the right information, they could move into the top 3.

 

I agree. I don't like the contract Idea either.

Seems to me if you can pay yourself, or get assistance, do it. Why make yourself an indentured servant?

There are recruiters that higher at training schools. Tuition is usualy cheaper for in state students. And you'll have the freedom to choose. (to an extent)
