So for anyone with an intimate knowledge of the industry for several years, you'll know that in many jurisdictions, a log book is something some of you can probably actually remember being introduced as a new kind of rule. There were the days when a driver could go on and on for days and days hopped up on who knows what and here and there was a horror story popping up due to some incredible lack of responsibility somewhere.

But were those the exceptions? Can anyone point me to information that compares safety records from decades ago to safety records for the industry today?

    Cheers

HOS and logbooks have been a part of trucking since the early 1930's. As far as T/T's being safer in past that's a hard question to answer because there was less traffic in thru the late 40's,50's,and 60's. Plus the Interstate System wasn't around during much of this period as well and wasn't really finished till the late 70's early 80's.

Ah. I didn't know logbooks had been a part of HOS for so long down here. They were only introduced federally in Canada in the late 80's I think. 88 maybe?

Yes trucking was different back then,a lot of it had to do with the drivers. When one broke down two or three stopped to see if they could help. Nowadays your lucky to get a call on the CB.

Do you mean trucks are safer today with this advanced equipment?

If so, is this from your personal observations? Are you saying that trucks with better safety equipment are safer today nearly regardless of the quality of driver operating them?

    Cheers

In the not so good old days of cabovers when I started, the saying was that "In a Cabover when you have a wreck, you're the 1st one there!"

Trucks are way better/safer for all of the previously stated reasons and more...The modern version of driver on the other hand is an accident looking for a place to happen!
