Have a wiring issue on my pete seems I have a short somewhere in the pass turn signal harness or up behind the dash. So far what I have been able to trace down with this intermittent problem is this. Left turn has no problems...ever. All week last week when I turned the right turn on the chickens on my bumper and fender guards (tied into the clearance lamps) would flash, along with all the lights on the trlr, not sure on the cab lights, but the dash lights would also flash with the turn signal.
Turn the clearance lamps on and the turn signal light on the dash would show steady, right STT was dim on tractor, trailer right turn was steady, left turn on trailer off. I unplugged the light chord from the TRACTOR right turn was still steady on the dash right STT light still dim.
Pulled bumper harness power varied on turn wire when turn was on volt meter reads 0.3 on clearance wire with turn on plug harness back in and still same effect even with clearance lamps flashing when turn is on. with clearance lamps on I get 12.47 on the turn and the clearance lamps wires. Checked grounds at headlights both headlight and turn signal ground are alright. Checking back farther it's all grounded. From what I can see after peeling back the lume no wires are touching anywhere down on the bumper harness I'm currently tracing back farther on the frame but it's slow going.
I'm looking for Ideas on what the problem could be. I've eliminated a possible grounding issue as the left side harness is tied into the ground for the right side and I have 0 problems with the left. Almost forgot kicking the 4 ways on clearance lamps will flash with the switch off, turn the switch on right side turn will go steady left side will flash.
After tracing the frame wires to check for touching wires my next step is taking the dash apart and tracing wires there although I'm hoping to avoid that as I have about 15 hours in this already and still have had 0 luck finding the problem. Any ideas on what else could possibly be giving me these fits?
I have a schematic according to that my turn signal is on the spare wires as the wires for the right turn are labled 227 on the harness that runs to the right headlight assembly. I have capped off the no. 8 wire on the passenger side the previous owner left it hanging and it was hot on the pass side my chicken lights are tied in there on the drivers side of the number 8 wire however it's not broken elimenating that being the cause of the problem (of course I checked that first hoping to get lucky).
I'm chasing my tail here looking for some insight and advise back out to the truck I'll check back here and update with what else has been checked and what still needs to be checked.
Have a good weekend.

had a similar issue once,,,turns out it was the wiring in the trailer,,try unplugging trailer pigtail,,see if it goes away
379exhd Thanks this. -
Can't remember what year the truck was, either 04 or 98,but anyway. There is a relay in the dash either behind or to the left of the steering wheel. That should get the turn signal flashing.

update. Unplugged the turn signal switch to take that out of the equation kicked the clearance lamps on turn signal indicator came on steady again. I've cut the wires to the bumper and fender guard lights still have the turn on steady when the clearance lamps are on. Unplugged the wiring harness to the clearance lamp harness, voltage as follows when LOOKING AT THE PLUG turn signal off. bottom 2 prongs 12.46 V, top right 0 top left 0. All have continuity. Turn signal on, bottom 12.46V top RIGHT prong 0.03V-.01V top left 0.
I can hear the relay click when turn is on I've swapped the relays around in the fuse block still have the same problem when the clearance lamps are on and the right turn comes on steady when the clearance lamps are off the right turn will flash and the rest of the clearance lamps will flash. The dash is torn apart right now and I cannot find any wires that are broken anywhere under there, no splices that I can see, I do seem to have a lot of harnesses that are unplugged I don't know if this is a factory deal where they leave them hang from the factory if they're not used or if somebody previously has gone in there and unplugged a bunch of harnesses. it doesn't appear that anything in those harnesses would be the cause though from what the way they are labeled. This one has still got me scratching my head. All I have successfully figured out at this point is everything is grounded.
I pulled the plastic cover on the firewall no missing or broken wires on the harness on the firewall everything had a good bit of dust on it though I don't know if that would be a possible cause of the problem or not. As I said it's intermittent I don't know if there is a wire behind the dash frayed and touching something that could be arching, or what. Pigtail is still good and is laying on the ground once again to take that out of the equation.
Is there anyway that the trailer harness could possibly have a broken wire or something of that sort in it? I have made a fatal mistake in not checking the plug on the back of the tractor for a ground I'll go check that now. -
If I understand he did un-plug the trailer and still had the issue.
I am not up on truck wiring and relays and such and guess it could be a relay but I would try and change bulbs to lights that do both turn & running lights for that side. A filament could have broken in a bulb and is hitting the other filament and back feeding into the system.
Guess you could pull the turn/run bulbs on that side, do not put any back in for testing, trailer disconnected and see if you get the issue that may tell if it is a relay/wiring issue.

I think I found the culprate. Turned the right turn on when I went back out and the light on the back of the tractor was out, turned the clearance lamps on no right turn on went huh, walked to the back of the tractor pulled the light out and all the wires in the pigtail on my right side tail light were worn with bare wires exposed not to mention the plug was corroded through so badly it was broken off how the light EVER worked I have no idea. I spliced everything for a quick fix this week as everybody is closed right now but so far so good no right turn solid when the clearance lamps are on and no clearance lamps flickering when the right turn is on and the clearance lamps are off.
thanks everybody for the help I probably should've checked that to begin with but the darn thing has always worked so I didn't think anything of it. With as shotty as the wiring was up front I though it had to be something up there. -
Hate it when the simple stuff has us tearing the whole truck apart to find the problem,,LOL

Good to hear you found the issue all be it now you know your truck better

This is the reason an owner operator need to understand the mechanical aspect of a truck. Take that problem to a dealership at 125$ an hour and watch those hours go by.
Good job 379exhd. -
Try unplugging the plug at the firewall and see what happens it will be the hood and trailer plug
