    It's a two-edged sword, for sure.

I'm sure some companies won't be affected much by a 30% GDP decline in the 2nd quarter. The results just aren't in quite yet though.

I have a less positive view.
We've been in decline for almost 50 years. We were SOOOOOO far ahead of the rest of the world in the 50's-60's that even coasting we maintained leadership for 30 years. (Part of it was Europe and Asia spent the 40's-50's rebuilding.) by the mid 90's though there were telltale signs of cracks in the foundation. So the baby boomers, put on a coat of paint and kicked it down the road. In the 00's "the porch collapsed", and we thought, "yeah, I'll fix that next summer. In 08 (housing crisis/bank bailout.) the building inspector noticed termites in the beams. So we killed the termites and set out some ant traps.

Well now the wiring is smoking. We turned off the breakers at the fuse box, and we're waiting to turn it back on.

(Took that house metaphor further than I wanted to,,,,,)

Anyway I'd say we're a borderline 2nd world power now. China's ascendant, Russia lacks the economy and the EU lacks the military. So by the standards of the 20th century, there are NO 1st world powers at the moment.

The whole point of MAGA, was to stop the deterioration of our status, but it's been a slow process, with many roadblocks.

This is probably our last canary in the coal mine moment. We need a fundamental change of how we invest, and a serious evaluation of globalism. (If we outlaw slavery, but send jobs to a country with human rights abuses have we really progressed?) if we lack the will or ability to stop this decline, we may be looking at a fall of Rome moment. And it might be 200 years before our standard of living returns to where it was in the 20th century.

    Agreed.
Sad that this isn't common sense.

We should probably take care of our knowledge base too. If Google becomes "The Library of Alexandria", and we suffer a nationwide power outage or EMP, we might loose 600 years of science in an instant.

Yes I know books are less efficient than databases, but you don't need to charge a paperback.

This is kind of the premise for a novel that's been kicking around in the back of my head for a long time—technology so far advanced that we truly become a paperless society. The setting seems to be far in the future. Computers made of metal, plastic and semi conductors are replaced with bio-organic "brains" that are networked underground much like a fungus. Humans are all interconnected through a huge bio-organic network.

Fast forward to the end where science discovers a mysterious, unused portion of our brain that seems to emit weak radio waves. Then it is revealed that everything in the beginning of the book happened 10,000 years ago. A virus has wiped out the bio-organic supercomputer, it decomposes and leaves no evidence of ever having existed. All existing knowledge died with it.

It took 2 months for the government to wreck the economy based purely on media fear mongering

And that proves Wallstreet is all BS. You wait though when the inevitable Economic Impact Hits the Market it's going to be a FreeforAll.

There was Absolutely nothing to Support the Rallies going on in the market last week other than niave buyers seeing a good deal and buying in heavily with turning a Blind Eye to what the economic impact of all this is .

No wonder I only paid .95 cents a pound for the 2 hams I bought at Aldis the other day.

No more Smithfield for me, I will do as much as possible in the next year to not enrichen the CCP
