hours of service?

I'm sure there's plenty of threads out on this already, but given the new circumstances I thought I would ask for some opinions. I wouldn't say I've ever "broken the law" ... but I don't legally have to keep e-logs (105 air miles) and I generally get it done. Now that e-logs are waved for OTR what do you guys think of that?

I've generally never had a problem with being bullied into working way too long, but with this COVID-19 stuff I'm starting to get annoyed with long hours. For example- today I was on the road for "only" 12 hours but 7-8 of those hours were spent on the side of the road broken down. Today was one of the only times with my company I basically refused to go get another load due to lack of time.

Part of me thinks "good for me" and the other part thinks "I've always done it before, and they love me for it, what's the problem?" In my defense, I called and asked if it was fine, I didn't just make that call on my own. Also there is still something that needs fixed on the truck before it leaves the state again.

When I called and informed my designated haul I wouldn't be there until at least 7:30AM and I had broke down the response was "Oh really?"... (in these times it's hard to hold my tongue and not just respond with "yea, really mother f***ker #### happens") but I kept it professional.

What do you guys think of these situations? I'm looking at it like what I'm hauling isn't essential anyway, and they're lucky to get what they get. But, at the same time I'm lucky to still be working.

    Opinions?

Your position expressed in the post will get your replaced in some point. So it matters little.

Broke truck, fine arrange to fix it and have the load repowered.

If you are hauling toys that are essential under a letter and exempt on bills from HOS, those toys go straight through express. Sleep after they get there.

Forget what you think company loves you or not. That does not matter. IF you become a problem, you will be eliminated easily enough. So don't.

If you cannot take the hours, go home. Sometimes in trucking is a form of battle to keep the USA going if it is empty cans, toilet paper or artillery munitions going as soon you can get it there. Its all the same. USA runs on trucks.

If you have too many conflicts, go home. Clear yourself out. Then come back out when you have no problems with the work. Or find something else in life that you enjoy.

I am not your opponet, there are times that trucking gets tough, the tough gets going. Crybabies go home. Not necessarily the OP here. Thats not what I am saying.

Whatever the problems are fix them. Fast. They ware waiting on you. Get going yer late already.

Why take the risk. In todays world its to much liabilty. Run a car off the road and kill them , ur company will throw u under the bus to save their own ###. If they want u to run the load with out HOS because its exempt then throw the dispatcher the keys and tell him to take the risk

First there is no new elog exemption right noe. There are some HOS exemptions for "critical" loads, but that's hos in general.
Two things for local time card loging
    1. It's 100 air miles.
    2. It's 12 hours max per day.
    3. Start and stop in same location everyday.

Sounds like you are running for a company that doesn't care about your CDL, and it will come and bite you in the backside. My suggestion is stop letting them trash your CDL and move on. Plenty of good companies out there and as your CDL is your income it's not worth putting up with companies that don't care.

With all due respect I could care less if someone reads my post and I get replaced. Big deal. I'm a good worker not just a good driver. Anywhere I have worked would have me back. I haven't even finished reading the responses but that went thru me this morning. I'm not bending over backwards for people taking advantage of me, period.

I mean no disrespect xHeavy, and I normally enjoy your responses and that you take the time to respond, but you have it entirely wrong. I haven't missed a single day of work with this company, or the previous 3 I've worked for. I was asking for opinions on what people think of hours of service in general. Not for a personal bashing. I work more than you know and would imagine I've gone more hours in a row than most people can stay awake. I was not asking for advice, just opinions. Also, I am driving in W.V. on mostly narrow/untreated roads/the middle of nowhere.... I'm sorry but your post was way off the mark. I do my job at the end of the day and no I won't be replaced for making a comment on a public forum. We can agree to disagree on that one.

When it comes to HOS violations and your CDL, you will never :
    • Have a dispatcher stand next to you in a courtroom and say they were the ones that begged you to take that "Hot Load"
    • Nor will a Customer

I say run legal. The days of paper logbook is over. I still find some people say, run till the job is done way of thinking. My company won't let us run over the HOS even if it legal today because of Covid 19. 12 and 14 hour days are long enough

E logs and elds are not waived.

Only those hauling the list of essentials are legally allowed to run without a clock but have to take 10 hours at the end of shift no matter what.

All others as I read fall out of that group.

What I think is this is confusing and many drivers and management need to go learn what it means.

The day of the outlaw is over. Those of us on paper logs run legal because most of our objections to elogs aren't because we want to cheat, but for other reasons, and we don't want them forced on us because we ran illegal.

But who wants to run around scales because you're overweight, or have bad tires or something else? Those days are and should be long gone!
