Got my CDL 2 years ago and have been with one flatbed company since May 2018 doing local work, which I like. But, things are slowing down badly. I doubt I'll be laid off, but paychecks will shrink big time for the foreseeable future.
The twin cities started a $2 billion, 14 mile light rail project last year. One of the dirt contractors on that project is running radio ads looking for owner ops. it seems like guaranteed work in a very uncertain time. But, I've never run my own business, never never owned a truck (I am NOT mechanical), and never pulled a side dump. Never used a wet kit even. I
do have about 40K cash.
Would I be nuts to jump into this? Or should I ride out the recession in my local flatbed company job.

Ride out the recession with your current job. I wouldn't even think about buying a truck with what's going on, I dont care who is promising what.

Hendegaard Transport is hiring for FedEx Freight in St. Paul.
Should be plenty of work now that people are ordering online vs. in-store shopping.

There’s a lot of things that 40k could be used for. A retirement account for one. Run some scenarios on the Internet. Might be a much better return, than Trucking. Also the money will be protected against Bancruptcy. A real possibility in the Trucking Bussiness. All advice is strictly hindsight, 20/20.

Keep your 40 grand.
Then go work for one of those owner operators.
If anything goes sideways, let them take the fall.
You can walk away unscathed, with your 40 grand
