Hello all, I recently find myself unemployed after almost 30 years in Corporate America. I have a pickup truck and a Enclosed Cargo trailer and someone suggested I use USHIP and become a carrier. However, I hit a snag. I spoke with a consultant and the guy told me I can't even get a DOT Number or a MC # because my loads would be under 10000 pounds. I am looking to only do LTL loads with a cargo trailer, transport motorcycles, cars or even tow boats. Called Insurance Companies to get a quote and it's like 7k a year. So how is someone to compete with these auction loads and be legit, insured. I appreciate any advice or insight - thank you for your responses, experience and knowledge in advance.

I'd ask that question in the expeditor / hotshot forum here: Expediter and Hot Shot Trucking Forum
tomtopshelf, MACK E-6, USMC 3531 and 2 others Thank this. -
It's a quick way to either..
1. Loose even more money than your current situation, or
2. Run illegally and pray you never get in a wreck, or even get pulled over.
Remember your competition is every person who owns a pickup truck....Western flyer, tomtopshelf, McUzi and 3 others Thank this. -
First of all your consultant doesn’t know what he is talking about. A dot number is required if the gross combined weight rating of your truck and trailer exceeds 10k pounds. Which yours most certainly will. You could be empty or hauling 2 pounds of feathers and still need it if your involved in commerce.
As for being legal and profitable using u ship...good luck. Every Tom dick and Harry has a truck and trailer. Many don’t run legal or understand their costs. Lots of them think they are making big money while they are loosing their shirts.
PS. Tell the consultant you want your money back.tomtopshelf, McUzi and beastr123 Thank this. -
well thankfully I didn't pay him this guy was part of some Free DOT Program I ran across.

Ok so if I am only doing Pickup Truck and Enclosed trailer loads - how much Insurance do I really need ? FMHSCA is not exactly clear and seems to contradict itself. I'm not a Semi Truck and Trailer - jimney crickets

Your right. Got get a quote for insurance on a tractor trailer as a new entrant. But be sure your sitting down first. Because it’s gonna be 3, 4, or maybe even 5 times what you were quoted.
HoneyBadger67 Thanks this.
