They get too big or old and the meat gets rank and tough. At which point they start docking money off them, like wet grain. I think most of the hog kills in other states would be overrun if everybody tried to ship them somewhere else, you'd have hogs dying in the trailers waiting in line to unload, but that's only an assumption.
Little side note, there's a reason big packing plants won't take belly rupture or stunted hogs, they taste like the pen.

Like @Rubber duck kw mentions, stopping and starting live animal production is very tricky. You can't hurry the process, nor can you delay it. These people that want to keep everything closed because of the perceived danger of Covid-19 are going to find out in a hurry that the Covid thing is going to be the least of their problems.
Example: As the slaughter of animals decreases, so does the production of by products used in pet food. A little farther down the line there are going to be shortages of food for fluffy and bowser. Probably half the households in the country have a pet, and we all know people are fond of their pets, treating them like family. As a matter of fact pet food outsells baby food in this country almost 2 to 1. They are going to be some very distressed people when that happens.

The problem is we allow just a handful of meat processors to process 95% of the meat we eat from the grocery stores and have essentially blocked the mom-and-pop processors from existing. By doing so the ones that service are so huge that they’re having abort pork and cattle etc. Well pork and cattle take time to be raised to the age of being butchered. So with the meat companies essentially stopping I’ll piglets in cattle from being born right now, we could be looking at a shortage for up to a year and a half.

Defrost it. Place on a plate. Drip chocolate sauce, pudding, whatever you prefer..

You've now made #### on a shingle. An its edible! ;)

Far as meat shortage - Here on the sandbar they've restricted buying it at the grocery stores...2 per person, but it's been this way since people bought out all the TP back in early march...otherwise no shortage. Mcd's is still serving up their new triple big mac thing, Hardee's is still slinging their burgers. Not sure about Wendy's here. I will have to stop by this week for a baconator.

I have no comments on people being fat/skinny I don't really care what you do, or don't eat, an would love it if others would do the same when it comes to what I eat. My world is simple...

Live your life, an I'll live mine.

Simple solution to this (I know not everyone can though) is buy locally raised food. And stock up. We buy a whole hog at at time and usually half a beef. All grown locally and butchered by local butchers.

We are strawberry nation here. There is a farm south of Cabot that is you pick it. About 2 weeks ago it was time to pick em. Several miles of cars lined up to get in. (And a chance to get outside legally) Ruined the traffic flow for a day or two.

Sometimes a large car leans with big boy hefty Inc inside.

Big boy gets out to work on a 10.00 chicken wing inside the resturant and the large car stays leaning over. You can bet at least one spring set is busted.

The other issue is at this point every small town butcher/locker is full and busy until August, you can't even bring in your ready to kill critter right now.
