I have a Peterbilt dump truck of that era with a C12. I've run it for 12+ years. If I was buying these are some things I'd consider.

Almost 1,000,000 miles on a dump truck is a LOT, no matter how well it's been maintained. They have a tough life. I would have a real hard time buying a dump truck with almost a million miles, or even half that.

Is it a factory built dump truck? (Suspension/rear ends/tranny, etc.). If not, $45K is way too much.

The C12 is a great engine.

Can you verify it's been well maintained? If the truck is at a dealer, they can do wonders making old worn out junk look new by painting the frame, box and polishing it up.

I'm not saying don't buy it, just make sure you're getting what you think you're getting. If you're patient something nice will always come up.

Well you have your mind made up so I didn't post my usual advice and won't.

But I will say this, blowby ONLY HAPPENS when the truck is under A LOAD AND ONLY UNDER A LOAD.

    And good luck.

When buying anything, all you can do is compare it to other Trucks in the price range. That’s the Market.Myself, I’ll take a 1 mil. Mile Truck that’s been maintained and Driven right, before a 400k mile Truck that’s been abused. Engines being the big ticket item, an old Truck, no matter what, will still need plenty of things replaced on a steady basis. For that reason, a good clean Truck, is a good start. Oil samples aren’t always reliable, and dynos are overrated. Never wasted my time with that stuff. A good well taken care of Truck, and some history, tells a lot. It’s still a gamble, have to count on repairs. It’s inevitable.
