I am in week 3 of an 8 week CDL A school at my local community college.
I contacted one of the large "training" companies...yes, the one with the blue trucks. They are willing to accept me into their orientation but they say that they are only hiring TEAMS from my area.
Any thoughts on team driving? I can see it being great if it was me and my best friend...but me and a complete stranger? hmmmm.
And what if he's a big, filthy slob who never bathes? That will make for a long first year (the amount of time I am going to try and stick it out to get the experience I need to move to a more suitable situation).
I would really like to hear from those who team with someone unrelated to them and that they didn't know from Adam when they first teamed. (Sorry, not really interested in hearing from husband and wife teams as that would obviously seem to be the ideal team situation).
Thanks folks. This forum is incredible for the wealth of info here. Thanks to all who contribute.

Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.
Team Driving to start? Thoughts?

Ideal situation my ###.
Can you imagine anything worse then being stuck in a 24/7 moving can, under constant load scheduling stress, with your gf/bf/husband?
I can't... and I've done it.
Werner runs their teams -hard-. But reality is if you can get another solo job do it, because they pay is not worth the stress.
In the end you are only getting paid for miles you could have done solo, aka you make 6k miles team. You get paid for 1/2 them. 3k miles. You can do 3k miles solo. But team you get to deal with the constant JIT freight, truck moving nearly 24/7, having to fight for showers/food breaks, and dealing with some one you may want to kill within 7 days. -
Yeah, I thought about that when I was writing it...I guess I was thinking "in a perfect world".
Given the state of the economy, I am not sure I will have a lot of choice. I plan to hit the recruiting circuit pretty hard in a week or two. Not many companies who'll accept a greenie.
Thanks for the info. I say, while on the outside looking in, that I won't mind running hard. But I am sure that the reality of it is another thing altogether. -
I see you're located in Jacksonville too. Are you taking your training through Florida State College (formerly FCCJ)? If so, how are you liking it? I'm really looking into trying to go there if I can find a way to pay for it. Sorry for the thread hi-jack, I can't send PMs yet.

Yes, get the classroom portion with Joe Lackey...great instructor. He subbed for us a couple of days and he is really good.
Good luck -
Now that name alone would make me bit leary of the course structure!!!

I starting driving right there in Jacksonville some years ago and it was team driving. The company was called Sav-A-Stop and I ran with different drivers every weekend because I was a casual driver. I had some good and some not so good. I was lucky thou because come sunday I was back at my other job. I was always on my dispatcher to run me single but the company didn't operate that way so I didn't get very many solo rides.
If I had to do it over again I'd pass unless I knew the other driver very well. Even thou I was new some of the older more experienced drivers scared me and I couldn't sleep when they drove. One time I did sleep very well was because the guy was Mr. Truck Driver and stopped at every truck stop so I would go into a deep sleep when the truck wasn't moving. It took him 8 hour to go 100 miles. Needless to say I drove the rest of the way and he just couldn't understand why I was so upset. Nope never again. -
Thanks GH. I am coming to that conclusion as well the more I ponder the thought. Of course the recruiter says they are only hiring teams out of North FL...but that is probably just the recruiter trying to get enough folks through that pipeline.
I am 5 weeks from my CDL and don't think that team is the way to go. -
Hey Other...yeah, that is the first thing we said when we heard his name...but I assure you and anyone else interested, Joe is good in the classroom and doesn't spend the day telling war stories.
Although he uses his real world trucking experience to enhance the lesson plan...he does a great job. -
Hey thanks. I live off of Herlong Rd. not that far from Cecil Commerce Center so it would be a real good move for me. I'll go out there tommorrow and see what steps I need to take to get in the next class.
