and just wanted to say hello and maybe get to know a few people. I have been discussing going on the road with a guy that has been trucking for some time. I wanted to know if there is a place here, or anywhere, that there are listings for people that want to have a passenger that they can also train to drive? I have a perfect driving record and I am 56. Maybe late in life but I am healthy and want to do this. I have gotten the skinny on DMV and what I need to do to get a permit. What I am not sure of yet, is what State? Do I get certified in Oregon where my home-base would be or do I need to get a permit for other States as well? Thank you all, Denise in Sams Valley Oregon

Welcome to the site. Great info here. I'm just getting into trucking myself. You need to to your reshearch. Lots of schools, lots of scams. Good luck...

is overwhelming but I have started with a couple of Companies here in Medford. Then, just because I need a lot of help getting my schooling financed, I may have to work with some of the notorious companies. I don't know, I hope I make the right choices. I will stick close to here as I know I can get a lot of honesty here, from the truckers themselves;) Thank you much, Denise in Sams Valley OR

PS I forgot to mention that my own, local employment office may even be able to help me get into school. They have some programs to help people that are sort of "dislocated" or starting over.

I was just able to send for info from Sage Training Schools in Boise ID. That is closest to me. They sound very good but I will wait and let you know what I am sent in the mail.

Oregongrown, Not sure if you have heard of the Workforce Investment Act (WIA). I have gone thru my local county in Colorado. WIA is a government grant to go to school. I find out tommorow if I qualify. They will pay for me to go to Sage in Colorado. Had to go some minor hoops but it free. Hope that will help you out!

Good luck Oregongrown! Trucking can be rewarding. It can be a ruthless industry too. I just experienced it with a company that I recently was terminated from. I made errors on my driver's logs (I logged legally) and bent a bat wing ($575.00 damage) on a truck by turning to tightly and it led to termination. I would have been happy to work and pay for damage that I was responsible for however, this particular company finds it more profitable to terminate. They also felt a need to put on my DAC record that I am an unsafe driver. I never once endangered the public safety. Now companies don't want to touch me. So, before you get started, consider that a couple of mistakes can get you blacklisted for God knows how long. I suffered triple jeopardy; termination, denial of unemployment benefits and blacklisting.

Trucking can be rewarding too. A driver can earn a decent paycheck as opposed to $9.00 an hour hourly jobs. Consider that you are working up to 14 hours a day too when you are driving. Consider life on the road too. Truck stop restrooms, truck stop restaurants, truck stop parking lots littered with garbage and other disgusting things that I don't want to go into and many other inconviences. It's a tough life. I did it for two years before being blacklisted. I did enjoy the times that my wife was able to travel with me....so there's another reward. I got to go places and see things along the way that was also rewarding.

The best of luck to you oregongrown. Be careful and do your research.
