Trailer number

I don't think so? But curious what others say

 

Many places want a tractor and trailer # to put on BOL's. A few states you have to indicate a 53".

 

We've always just had the trailer number go in sequence with the tractor. I'm truck 92 with trailer 92A. When I bought my current trailer, it became 92B. Our other one is 1971 and 1971A. It's simple and takes out any guess work.

 

Never had a trailer that wasn't numbered.

 

I’ve never pulled one that wasn’t numbered. The flatbed company I drove for just had “T whatever the truck number was” because we pulled the same trailer. The guy I pulled cattle for was just whatever number he picked when he licensed the trailer. The pneumatic company I pulled for uses the last 4 of the VIN for the trailer number.

 

Maybe you could name trailers instead of numbering them.
For instance, "Rusty Boy" or "Fat Girl"

Is a trailer number required by law? I have no idea but no number may (will) keep you from being loaded.

 

Even if there are no regulations requiring it, you still want to get the numbers as it can help in various situations like when you are going through the shipper/receiver gate and the security guard is writing down your equipment numbers, or when you are backed up to the dock and the loader or unloader needs to verify he’s working on the correct trailer. Also, now that I remember, here in TX, your truck and trailer need to be assigned a number when you register them though the DMV.

 

There is NO legal or regulatory requirement for a tractor or trailer number.
