To derail: I have a 29LTD. I used the meter in it, to tune. It sounds like that's not much good? What's a decent tune meter that's readily available at some truck stops, or would I have to go to a radio shop? Also, I want to replace the stock mic, it's really poorly built. What would you recommend?

That's true, a lot of those meters aren't very accurate. Of course if it's a power meter, it would at least show if he's getting RF out of the radio or not. It would be better than nothing.

 

I would start doing some googleing on a good meter but my next question..Is this just for casual chat for directions n such every so often or is this radio stuff gonna be a hobby..

 

Dont need an rf meter just someone else to listen...

 

Asatics to me are too tinny sounding..Roadkings are not the mic from yester year either..
A slightly modded sl41 or a sra 198 matched to the frew range of your radio..The 198's are a good noise cancelli g mic and less costly than most others of same quality.

Well NS..whats an rf meter gonna say about a 29ltd that a buddy cant tell sittin across the lot or x miles down the road..
If its not been tweeked by a golden screw driver he has at absolutely nest 4 watts minus the loss through ant set up and coax loss ect..He might get 2-3 watts out..
Its sounding like a basic set up just to ask for directions so its a waste....A simple swr meter and a multi(ohm)meter is all he needs...
