Got my CDL through a local school here in michigan. Have a job offer from swift and trans am. Not sure which way to go. Anybody know what kind of miles, home time & money i should expect from these guys? The recruiter at swift says because I live fairly close to the terminal I will be able to get a local job with them within 6 months? Just not sure what to do. Any info would be helpful.

Closer to home the better. TA is reefer-right? Dry van is easier for a newbee. Right now, ya better just grab whatever you can in Michigan. Good Luck !!!!!!!!!!

Ya TA is reefer, I am just not sure which way to go. I know jobs are hard to get these days around here. I read all the horror stories about some of these companies and wonder if its something I want to get involved in. Thank You

I would have to agree with this, totally. Can't be too picky right now. Reefer isnt that bad. I ran reefer while on my 2nd mentor's truck (not all the time but 70% of the loads were) and its not that bad. once the doors are closed, and you're all fueled up and rolling down the road, it looks just like a dry van from the left seat anyway. =)

The recruiter from swift says I shouldnt have any problem getting a local gig with them after a few months, also says they will try to get me home for the weekends, think this is BS?

I would be very skeptical, be very specific in regards to what you want with them. I won't say anything bad about them, but I will say that my recruiter slightly skewed his answers when I was asking these questions and let me believe some things that were just down right wrong. It's pretty much the same way with any carrier if you are just starting out, so I would expect it and be prepared.

Dark does drive for Swift as do I. He and I both are on dedicated fleets (not the same one)

If you go OTR I will warn you that you're just not going to be home every weekend.

You'll get home when the freight gets you there.

I'm a current driver for TA. Company. If you go with them, they will try to get you to lease and you DON"T WANT TO DO THAT. I'm making more as a company driver than most L/O's do.

Hometime. You have a form that you put in at least 8 days before you want to go home and if its accepted, 97% of the time your good. I have been screwed twice on it tho. Not to bad for a years time. The sooner y6ou put your request in, the better for you.

TA is all autos. Trainers, like everybody else, you have your good and bad ones. They seem to feel that if you have 90 days with them, your qualified to be a trainer. :biggrin_2551:
Mine wasn't that good but still got thru it and learned more on my own than I ever did with him. Read and learn the policy book, especially when it comes to what you can be paid for.

Miles, it can vary depending on the year and what kind of DM you have. I've had as little as 1800 to as much as 3300 a week. They'll start you out at the lower limit and give you plenty of times on the loads and will slowly increase your miles as you prove yourself. A GOOD DM IS VERY IMPORTANT.

Don't know what is going on at the moment but 5 hrs after coming off of home time, still waiting on a load. This has never happened before. They may not be good on preplans but usually, within a hr after your mty call, you have another load.

    Hope this helps out some.
