My new employer wishes me to get a note from my personal doctor regarding my service dog, that is a bit different then the one I currently have. This is all well and good, but when I called the good doc up she's apparently never written such a note and is unsure what exactly she should say so she is going to see me late Monday after doing some research. She's been my doctor for 3 years since before I became a truck driver and is fairly new on the job she only become a doctor 5 years ago. She says I am actually the first 'trucker' she knows about seeing lol.
The letter I ALREADY have states the dog is prescribed to me, basically. The letter they WANT has to clear me for trucking safely WITH the disability that the dog serves. o.0
Is this normal? Does anyone have any such letter from their doctor? What wording is needed?

Without getting too personal, why was your dog "prescribed" to you, what kind of a service animal is he? I would like to kind of get a better idea so I can give you my opinion without being way off base.
I don't actually know anyone that has a service animal on the truck. -
I believe you are asking questions which are not really required at all. I did not ask if the dog legally can come, I know the dog legally can come. I and the EOC discussed this at length as well as discussed with the employer.
The employer is satisfied with the medical reasons for the animal, what they are looking for is a letter that also tells them that it is within the limits of the disability to safely operate the truck with reasonable accommodations that have been negotiated. Thusly this is not about seeking 'opinions' on my use of a service animal, or seeking medical advice or legal advice to the legal issues related to it.
Its just a simple question as to if it is normal policy to request that sort of documentation and if so, about whats is the company looking for to be included. It cost me 50.00 WITH insurance to go see the doctor and get a note, and 109.00 without it. As my insurance is lasped between jobs this is going to be out of pocket and I don't want to HAVE to pay another visit fee because the document didnt contain the right working, as was the case with the last one.
The letter I have basically says I am disabled and the doctor has and the use of a service dog as medically nessicary. The reason I chose my doctor is because she supports the use of service animals you would be surprised how many doctors do not. But the co wants me to have soemthing that also says my ability to safely drive a truck will not be affected as well. Which was new to both of us. -
IMO; the doctor simply needs to state in the letter that whatever your disability is IT poses no risk concerning your ability to drive a truck!........................

I hope so because thats what I am basically going to try to get, but if I have to go back because its not perfect I am going to strangle someone. Thats my big worry, I already had to go get doctor checked last week to get the first one at the potential employers request, and now I need to go back and get a completely new one.

It is absolutely reasonable. Anything prescribed to you has to be cleared by a medical doctor and the doctor has to state that it will not interfere with your ability to perform your regular duties. Per 391.45 (12)

She told us last year she's afraid of cats

Sorry IROCu..I couldn't resist!
This letter sounds a lot like that other lady who needs a letter saying that with the pacemaker she is good to go. Probably along those lines. Your Physician knows there isn't a form letter for this or any other. They'll either write it or not. However, if the dog only minimizes the disability and isn't a full out correction they will drag their feet.... physicians get sued too for all sorts of things. -
IMO, if you can pass a D.O.T. physical, and have a current medical card, why would you also need a letter saying you can safely operate a commercial motor vehicle?
I would think, if the doctor giving you a physical didn't think you could do the job, he/she wouldn't have passed you. -
A DOT physical isn't all inclusive.
Imagine my surprise when I literally had to threaten my doctor to obtain a release. After his second refusal...although he said "verbally" I was good to go. -
I dont get it. How the hell can you drive a truck being handicapped? You have to have a frikkin dog. I had to jump through hoops for one company over cancer I had 5 years ago. Still didnt get hired. You have a handicap requiring a DOG, in a 80,000 lb TRUCK, and they are ok with it as long as you get some cheesy doctors note? I dont understand it. I was actually asked to move my truck once because I was in a handicapped truck space with out a placard. How are handicapped people able to drive trucks? When you say you need a DOG, I am thinking you got some poor eye site. Unless you are deaf. Either way with those two dont see how you could be cleared to drive a truck, or anything for that matter. Personally I wouldnt pescribe a dog to you either. Dont see why anybody would. Especially if you need that animal to drive a truck. Someone (the company actually contemplating your employment) must really want "Sparky" handling that truck. Plain stupid!
