P stands for pump. Apparently not necessary, as i switched mine from DSP402 to DS402

The P in DSP stands for planetary double reduction.
I believe its DSH and the H is for High performance or high horsepower applications.
Google "Dana Service manual" and it calls out all the meanings for the model numbers. -
I'm not sure that a DSP40 is "double planetary", but I do know that I was talking about a completely different rear-end than the op was asking about. DS402p is an Eaton, and the p stands for pump in that one.

DSH has a 3/4” larger diameter ring gear. It’s an oddball.

Would either these be considered a super 40?

I would not consider a dsp40 a “super 40” however, back in the day, a ds405 was considered a super 40 because they had heavier axle housings....even though they had the same basic differential as a ds380, ds402, ds404 and dsp40. Are you confused now?
The only reason to spec a dsh40 is to satisfy hp/torque requirements for the truck manufacturer if you insist on 600/2050 in a standard road truck application.spsauerland Thanks this. -

DS405 is an Eaton. DSP40 and DSH40 are Dana.
