Jake brakes Problem

    1997 detroit 60 series engine The jake brakes keep coming on even with jake brake switch in the off position .I already changed the switch. Any knowledge of this would be greatly appreciated.

    Sounds to me you've got two possibilities:

    A harness/wiring issue. If you can plug in to the truck you could see if something is commanding the jake on. Maybe a short to power on the jake solenoid wire, actuating the solenoid when the jake is not commanded on.

    Other possibility could be an issue with oil getting past the solenoids on the jake heads, actuating the jake pistons. Not sure how likely this scenario is but I could see it happening.

    My mechanic says it can't be the jake wiring harness he keeps say ecm and i just don't think so.

    It could be the ECM but it is very unlikely. They have a very, very low rate of failure.

    Unplug the switch and see if issue persists . If it doesn’t then new switch is faulty or wrong one maybe.. if issues persists I’d check wiring closely to see if it’s rubbed through and power is crossing over.

    Hook a test light in to the wiring going In to the Jake solenoids.
    If you have power there when the the problem occurs it’s an electrical problem.
    If the problem occurs with no power there it’s a hydraulic mechanical problem under the valve cover.
