Regarding the split berth provision, if you take 2,3 hours in sleeper, then later take the 8,7 hours in berth, do you start with fresh 14? If not what’s the point other than being able to stop your 14 hour clock? Thanks

The split sleeper simply pushes the 14th hour farther back. No clock stoppage. It's only effective if you leave drive time available
cletus snow Thanks this. -
Thanks but at the end of second sleeper berth period do you get fresh 14, I’m referring to the new rules going into effect
-
No, you don't get a fresh 14 until you take a full 10 or reset.
alds and cletus snow Thank this. -
Ok, so at 2 nd period you got to get full 10 I got it. But bear with me please if you take 7, 8 first split if needed then you push 14 out by the same number of hours, correct?
-
You do not HAVE to take a full 10, the 8/2 or 7/3 count as a 10, but from the first break.
So if you drive 5 hours, you still have 6 available. A 3 hour break and you still have 6 available. If you drive 5 more you have 1 available, but if you take 7 in the sleeper, you will now have 6 available again. Then drive for 3 and you have 3 available. Take a 3 hour break and you will have 8 available again. Drive for 4 and you have 4 available. 7 hours in the sleeper and you have 7 available again. Drive for 1 and you have 6 available. 3 hour break and you have 10 available .... so on and so forth. Its a rolling clock.
You cannot exceed 11 driving hours or 14 working hours and continue to drive without a 10 hour break. The split just keeps deferring that so you cannot exceed the HOS from the end of the first break. It can be confusing at first, but once you understand how it works, it can be extremely beneficial.Michael H and cletus snow Thank this. -
Current rules
Split Sleeper Simplified
- 8 hours (must be in the sleeper) pauses your 14
- 2 hours (does not have to be in sleeper) does not pause your 14
- the two break periods (8 and 2) can be taken in any order
- the two work periods on either side of either break, added together, cannot exceed your 11/14/70
- When using the split-break you enter into a cycle of
work | rest1 | work | rest2 | work | rest1 | work | rest2 | work, etc.,until you return to a "normal" schedule by way of a 10-hour continuous rest or 34-hour reset.
The new rules will change the 8 to between 7-8, and the 2 to between 3-2 so long as the two periods total 10. Both breaks will pause the 14.Snailexpress, Bean Jr., cletus snow and 1 other person Thank this. -
Ok thanks fellas, I got the gist of it now. And to think I used to ##### about the old 15 hour rule, I’d go back in a heartbeat
-
So a 2 or 3 hour break will pause your 14 now with the new rules and you will regain back at the end of the break what you had on your 11 and 14 when you started your break ?Last edited: Aug 25, 2020

With the new rules, yes....
though I'm not sure if thats true without the use of the second break. I would think it would have to be true regardless, otherwise you could be potentially driving in violation that would no longer be a violation after a second break.
That would cause a legal nightmare for the court system if people were getting tickets or in accidents during a period that is in violation at that moment,, but that period would no longer be in violation in a few hours.tommymonza Thanks this.
