Just a few quick questions: hypothetically if a person were to run an amp in conjunction with his radio, my understanding is that with co-phased antennas you should run rg59 coax. So say this person also leaves the swr meter in line. My question is does a person run rg59 all the way from antennas to radio or go rg8 from swr/watt meter to amp to radio? Also am I missing something here that I have not thought of?

It's all 50 ohm coax, so the RG8X coax is just fine to run from your radio to SWR meter and to amp. Co-phased coax runs from the output of the amp to the antennas. To be a little technical, the RG59 coax is 72 to 75 ohm coax (cut a certain length), between the antennas. Then it is connected to 50 ohm coax that runs to the radio.rabbiporkchop Thanks this.

Okay thank you sir. Just for clarification though wouldn't it be radio to amp then amp to meter then out to antennas in the final configuration? Also if i understand this correctly a person has to tune each antenna separately then together with just the radio then with the amp in place does that sound about right?

Yes, radio hooks to amp, then amp hooks to swr meter, then swr meter to antennas. The first thing is to make sure the antennas match your radio before even installing amp. The say an swr of 1.5 or less is best.
Some people tune each antenna separately. Since you are dealing with a co-phase antenna system, I would recommend adjusting both antennas at the same time. In other words, if you shorten one antenna by 1/4 of an inch, shorten the other antenna by 1/4 of an inch. The reason I think it's best to do it this way, is because the radio sees both antennas as one antenna.Last edited: Sep 10, 2020

By the way.....what brand/model of cb and amp are you hooking up?
