Kit Carson Elementary to be renamed after Black principal
LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Clark County School Board has voted to rename a central Las Vegas elementary school after the district's first Black female principal.
The board voted 5-1 Thursday to rescind the name of Kit Carson Elementary School, expressing concerns over Carson's role in the death of hundreds of Native Americans during the colonization of the West.
Carson led the Long Walk of the Navajo in 1864, forcing Navajo people to walk from modern-day Arizona to New Mexico in the middle of winter. At least 200 Navajo people died of starvation and exposure.
The board said this week that the school will be named after Helen Anderson Toland, 94, who was the principal of the elementary school in the 1960s when Las Vegas schools were still segregated.
“We’re living in a different time now where not only do we need to review policies, we need to review practices, we need to review programs,” Trustee Linda Young said, adding that four or five other school districts in the country have also considered rescinding Carson's name from educational buildings.
Of the six school board members present at the meeting Thursday, only one voted against the rename.
Chris Garvey voted against the change because of financial concerns after the district estimated the name change would cost $29,000 to $40,500.
The school would normally cover the cost, but because Kit Carson Elementary officials are not requesting the change, the board must find an alternate funding source, and have asked the community for help.

"This school is rated below average in school quality compared to other schools in Nevada. Students here perform below average on state tests, are making above average year-over-year academic improvement, and this school has below average results in how well it’s serving disadvantaged students. Large disparities in suspension rates exist at this school, which is concerning."

The changing names and statues torn down.
America would not be what we are, without all the people in our history.
1984, 1984 is this what drives change.

States should set their own school standards vs. having to follow national standards.
Let the states compete for the best schools.
Fund charter schools equally with public schools, so the teachers unions are cut out of the picture. -
Good god man, that quote really crapped on this moment. I think we all know that changing names and brands dont solve anything. For this particular story, it's about letting people know of contributions from other people whom we may not have known before. It ain't a snowflake thing. It's just bringing awareness to something different. Regardless of color, it makes sense to name a school after someone who contributed to a school. Colleges do it all the time, whether it's a renown professor, or a financial contributor. I don't have a problem with this particular change.Sirscrapntruckalot Thanks this.

our NEW history, will be monuments and statues that'll look like these...
xsetra Thanks this. -
That's right, so you can build new statues of different contributors. You can being awareness to different figures of history. We are for the most part aware of white history, and to a lessor degree Native American history. There are many blacks that have contributed to history that are lessor known that MLK, Malcom X and such. I dont look at this as damage control. Now changing the name of the Washington Football Team, that's damage control. Redskins should have never been the name, but pressure from sponsors forced that change. Not very genuineSirscrapntruckalot and xsetra Thank this.

My point is, the priorities are not in order. The students are being shortchanged because of poor quality teachers. The students aren't getting an equal opportunity for a good education and money can solve that by raising the standards for teachers in that school and paying them well.
The $40K being spent to change the name of the school, should be spent of something to benefit the students this year.Last edited: Sep 11, 2020
