Yeah I live in AZ and the highways out here are 75mph. It makes sense, I can imagine how much money is saved. The only reason I was concerned is what if you get in a situation where you really need to get out of someone's way and you can't?

Sorry if I came on a bit strong...
But the point of fact is driving "at the speed limit" may be fun, but it's not economical - and doesn't necessarily get you down the road any "faster."
- You end up having to slow down for other traffic... constantly.
- Accellerating a large truck burns a lot of fuel.
- Going down the highway burns a lot of fuel.
All of that means you're running into fuel stops much more frequently than if you drove slower in the first place. Plus, with unloading appointments being what they are (especially on the reefer side of the business) it really doesn't matter if you get to your destination 1 hour early or 5 hours early.
In most cases the fact that a truck is "governed" isn't a problem simply because of the lower speed limits in many states. 65 is within 5mph of most state limits, and is a required maximum if the company you sign on with hauls in Ontario or Quebec in Canada. -
Thank you for the apology.
I do understand the fuel economy issue. I was just concerned about safety. I don't like to drive the full 75mph here in AZ when on the highway either but sometimes I am forced to get on the gas cause someone is riding my ### so close I can't even see their headlights. I guess in a big truck though they won't be as inclined to do that lol because they will be the ones getting hurt. -
Yea my truck is not governed but i never go over 72 well not hardly. I get my best mpg at about 62 and just smile and waive as the others go by . I can average around 7.5 at this speed, And i average about 6.7 at 70 or 72 this becomes about $180.00 a week raise to me just by slowing down. So thats a good bit of money to save over a year .

The reality of driving on today's roads is that no matter what speed you drive you are always going to have folks that are going faster or slower. Even in the states where the speed limit is 75 you'll have clowns running 95 or more.
I started doing the slow down thing clear back in 06 and 07. Do you know how much 80 across NE sucks at 65? I do. lol
My truck went from 5.8 at 75 to 7.5 to 8+ at 63.
LooneyTune Thanks this. -
Exactly, fuel is our biggest expense. My truck is wide open but I never drive faster than 65. The truck that I have a driver on though is governed at 65 because when the driver does not own the truck he does not think about things like fuel economy and will be more likely to speed. I will never give a driver a truck that is not governed.
Also for insurance reasons companies cut down the speed. You do not have to drive fast to get to your destination. The speed limit is the limit, it does not mean that you can not go slower than the limit. If someone wants to go faster, well they can pass me. -
in my truck-- its topped at 62 and trh rpm's cant go over 1300. there atr drivers at my company that go 52-53 mph, and even though they get 8 to the gallon-- i cant see going all over i-80 doing 55 mph. that low of speed makes me wanna go to sleep
antoinefinch Thanks this.
