2 year contract for rookies normal??

That's a common response. I have contacted a few companies over the years inquiring about their "new pay scale" They always want to chat where as I only want the facts in the way of message and absolutely won't phone, I never get a response

 

I came across the Skilled Trucker Canada site on Facebook last night. You gotta take a peak if you've never seen it....

 

Bison is a good company to start with. And yes, some companies do have this policy where they make you sign 2 year or a 1 year contract. When I got my AZ license and was looking for a job, I called Challenger Motor Freight. They said they would be willing to take me on and train me for 7 or 8 weeks, but then I would have to sign their contract that I would stay with them for I don't remember how long, and if I don't, then I would have to pay them for the training that they would've given me. I ended not joining them, but started with another company.

 

Sadly that is not the case anymore. Dump/Gravel/logging is even harder to get into the OTR. I am on the island and man, min 5yrs of Coastal Logging driving experience. Same goes with Dump/Gravel.

 

Scant few want the OTR jobs which are certainly not paying any premium considering the cost of living in BC. Most of the local work I saw in Kelowna wages were mediocre at best.

 

BC in general has mediocre wages in every profession. I considered moving back there this spring. $5/hour less than Alberta and the cost of living is way higher. Decided I'll just stay here instead lol.

 

And yet somebody can hop off a plane as a TFW and jump right into a truck. Guess that's a perk of working for free.

 

Yep, free with the promise of a PR card is powerful. 3-4 companies in Calgary don't even hide the fact that's what they're paying anymore. $50/wk cash and fuel card points for Food; PR after 5 years OTR.

 

Nobody born here would put up with that crap. Pathetic.

 

Nah they done hide it at all. Current company I work for asked me "do you need PR?" We can do it for $30,000 and work for 22 cents a mile for 2 years. I'm like do I seem like a guy who needs PR? Taking advantage of people and making our roads unsafer... Had me a dedicated tractor, a nice Volvo vnl 760 2019. Went on vacation for 6 days and another immigrant driver smashed my truck in 3 different places and tried blaming me. Company is making him pay full damage to the tractor (roughly $5,000).

Oh well, 2 more months and I'm outta here for greener pastures.
