My head hurts.
OP, rebuild or replace the shift tower. It's easy, and shouldn't be very expensive. The transmission is most likely perfectly fine.
How many miles on the truck? -
Well it could be the tower. Op u said it “hit metal”? If you hear a bang when the shifter gets kicked out, then that’s a problem. If you hear a bang when you put it in gear after it’s been kicked out, that’s a bigger problem. I’m curious, when you accelerate does the shifter stay or does it get kicked out. Go take it to the Mexicans in Chicago, they’ll do a rebuild in 1 day. -

I don’t know what “cowboy style “ shifting is but, I always float shift. It’s not jerking the shifter but a steady slow move of the stick into the next gear as the RPM drops.
D.Tibbitt Thanks this. -

Dude is just floating the gears... If you know what your doing you can do that with any non-synchronized transmission.... Although he is making more noise with the jakes than is necessary.D.Tibbitt and mustang190 Thank this.

Got it. Jamaican accent and jake brake speed shifting to a reggae beat. I have been doing it right the whole time. Lol!D.Tibbitt, Brettj3876 and 650cat425 Thank this.
