I have worked full time since I was 17, now 54. I worked for a printing company as a fork lift driver for the last 11 years. Got the shaft from them lost my job. No one cares about their employees any more. No matter what industry you work in. Honesty and hard work dose'nt mean anything anymore. It sucks!!! I think Roehl is no different than anyone else.

I tried getting on with Roehl once but they rejected my application due to a very minor rear end accident I had over 4 years ago, the only accident I've had in 14 plus years of driving. The recruiter actually told me "we view your accident as a sign of things to come." I was like wtf?
-
And they told me- that since I've never had an accident - that at my age I'm over due !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! P P on em.......

From what I gather alot of OTR's are hiring cdl students. Because, it's one cheap labor, two a source of income for them besides the customer. It's all about the mighty dollar. I wonder if it's like this in other countries around the world.

Croosbronx and others...
This is an edit ---->Hey, Croosbronx, i came back in and edited this to say that after re-reading your post, i think we agree...I think i originally misunderstood your "Almighty Dollar" comment.
Original post.......
This is going to sound like a personal attack but it isn't...there are just so many here whose collective heads are so far up their "it's all about me" rear ends, that they simply have no idea of what they speak.
Of course, it's about the almighty dollar!!!!!!!!!
Let's play a game...
Starting today...you are the owner of the company that you work for.
How are you going to operate that company? What is the return you will accept in order take the risks involved (now, remember, you have a 1000 yahoos from all backgrounds out on the open road operating 80k lb. rigs with $1,000's of freight that you do not own but are totally responsible for.)
You are responsible if that yahoo slams into a school bus and kills people. You are responsible for everything associated with the movement of the freight you have agreed to move...safely and on time.
So many people here have NEVER made a payroll and have no idea what it takes to operate a profitable business.
What if I said I have a rental property I want to sell you. You become the landlord. The home is in a neighborhood where every other house is a rental property. They are all very similar so rents will be pretty much the same across the board.
Why were you willing to take the risk of buying a property in which you would not live? Because you expected to receive a minimum level of return for the level of risk you were willing to take.
Now...it's the middle of the summer in AZ and the AC goes out. Who is going to replace that unit and with what equipment?
Answer...The most inexpensive person you can find with the best equipment for the least amount of money you can spend. You know why? BECAUSE it is about the ALMIGHTY DOLLAR!!!!!!!!
Remember, company employees, including the evil owners are paid from the gross revenues of the company.
Once the operating expenses (a large portion of which are those ALMIGHTY DOLLARS paid to drivers) have exceeded the gross revenues generated...the owners have few options...ESPECIALLY in a business as competitive as freight hauling.
They could eliminate drivers altogether (which some here would probably vote for as long as they are not among those eliminated) and in so doing fail to serve the customers WHO REALLY PAY THE WAGE and thus, risk losing the account, a scenario in which NO ONE wins.
OR the owners reduce the expenses (INCLUDING WAGES...I know, why wages?) as low as they can, in any way they can, in order to continue to serve the customer and maintain the drivers required to provide that service.
Remember, they laid it all on the line to provide that service, not to lose their life's work in order to pay the drivers as much as they can. They pay the drivers as much as they have to in order to keep the freight moving.
Sounds like many who come here need a government job...and admittedly, this will work for a while...that is, to the point that all the entrepreneurs and business people are beaten into submission.
Ever been hired to work by a broke truck driver? Why would that be?
Okay, rant over.Last edited: Oct 29, 2009

94, I agree with you 100%. Alot of drivers don't look at it from the company's end. But like you posted before. Why own or start a business if you're not in it for profit. I don't know of anyone who would start a business just to go out of business quickly.
Alot of drivers online post mostly negative stuff. I was wondering how come we haven't heard from 20 years plus OTR veterans. What's their take on all this? I'm sure there are some out there who can give us their point of view on the business. -
I think they are out there earning $$ and don't have time to spend here.
I hope that is me beginning on Nov 9...if nothing changes, I'll be in Elm Springs AR on the 9th starting orientation with Willis Shaw Express. Can hardly wait. -
Keep us posted on what's happening with you at orientation. I know you'll be busy and what not. Try if you can let us know how things are going for you from time to time.
Good Luck and godspeed. -
