You know you're a FNG

I've done it.
Warned the shop foreman a couple times that we had trouble brewing.. because I knew that truck.. and I could hear it coming.

He said.. "Awww... I dunno what that could be. Run her til she pops!".

She popped.
Then he said... "You threw a rod through the block!"..

I went off.

 

IDK, rods and cranks are pretty tough, running out of oil, I think the pistons would stick before a rod broke. They are made by human beings, and could just be metal failure. Old Detroits were known for that. I drove a Louisville Ford, 238, came in from a run, mechanic says, "put it in the shop, it's due for a service", okay, come in the next day, my truck was gone. I said, where's my truck,? Mechanic said, with no prior notice, mind you,, they started it up and it threw a rod through the block. I can say, of all the BC Cummins motors I sat behind, I never saw'r a rod break.

 

I had a similar experience with a cracked piston. I told our useless mechanic that the truck was running like crap, he said to drive it, the next day it started smoking so bad that it looked like the engine was on fire...

 

If you do a Pre-Trip. How can you be out of oil? SMH
