When my turbo exploded years ago on my Cat, I was thinking the old school ways and replaced it on the side of the road. I cleaned the air filter cans and all tubing, but I didn’t touch the CAC. Well, when I got rolling, I didn’t make it 1/8 mile before it started howling. Ended up the debris from the CAC that I didn’t clean ruined the replacement turbo. Long story short, it cost me 2 turbos for my mistake. And they where genuine Cat turbos $$$$$. I guess it could of been worse and get more debris in the head and cylinders. Live and learn. Goodluck

How did debris in the CAC get back to the turbo? Anything in the CAC would be going into the engine.
Diesel Dave Thanks this. -
When air goes out of the CAC, it goes into the engine, then out the exhaust. The turbo is driven by exhaust gas and anything that the exhaust expels goes through the turbo fins and makes for a bad day.

That was my thinking, that’s why I didn’t think about cleaning it. Go figure.....
