In late September, around the 21st, I started working with a recruiter out of the Memphis, TN location for employment as a driver with Swift. I was recruited and was to be at the academy on Oct 19th. I was supposed to leave in 3 days. I had already put in my 2 weeks at my current job, already had a bus ticket ordered, my DOT Physical complete, gotten my Class A Permit, completed my online Swift tools, and was all set to go.

So I decide I'd go ahead and run up to the bus terminal to get my bus ticket today so that I knew what time I would be leaving on Saturday. I called up my recruiter to ask what time I needed to be there on Sunday, and was told that she needed to talk to me. I was then told (this is just the jist of it) that I would not be able to attend the academy, because I'm not 23.

    WHAT?!!?!??!

Apparently, around the first of October, their insurance rules had changed so that drivers had to be 23 in order to be hired on to drive for Swift. This new found fact enraged me. So after my conversation with my recruiter, I called out to the Phoenix location. I figured I'd go to home base with this one. I spoke to a very nice man there who knew exactly what I was talking about and the situation. He checked out my file and let me know that I was recruited BEFORE the new rule took effect, and that considering the circumstances they SHOULD still honor that. I was told the absolute best thing to do would be to speak with Taniella at the Memphis location tomorrow about everything and see about being able to still attend.

I've gone through SO much in order to get prepared to leave on Saturday, just to find out 3 days in advance that I would not be attending. I'm hoping and praying that tomorrow I'll have some GOOD news, and still be able to attend regardless. If anyone would like to contribute their comments, PLEASE DO! I would REALLY appreciate it. Thanks!!

    Baack Thanks this.

Personally I find it hard for them to even think of raising the bar to age 23. Why? Because they have students/drivers/trainers in their 30's, 40's, 50's, and older who still can't drive.. I do not no what the tactic is behind it, but to me it is crazy.. Hope it works out for you tomorrow and you still get the job..

I never even made it to orientation. They were supposed to schedule me for a slot and told me they were booked solid. And then when I called back later on in the month, they told about the change in policy.

I thought that changed that like 2 years ago, for those that come here often....wasnt there another student that went through that not too long ago?

Yeah, it really sux bad guys. I have noo idea what the motive is behind it at all, either. I just find it so crazy that they recruited me well before the policy changed, and you'd think they would honor the grandfather clause to that. I'm really anxious about calling in the morning, since I just want to know what's going to happen.

Truckermario, what was their change in policy to you?

I'll post back here in the morning as soon as I know something, guys. I'm calling as early as I can! Wish me luck!

Best of luck to you. One would think they would honor their policy back to the date you began your talks with the recruiter. If not, I would ask why this policy change was not mentioned to you BEFORE you began everything. I would think they knew before the first of October this change was going to be taking effect.
