In need of advice from veteran reefer O/O's

    I'm in the market for a new reefer trailer. The one I have is a 48' Great Dane stainless spread, and it's still a great trailer, but it's a little on the heavy side. I would like to stay with a spread axle, but I am looking into a 51' spread. I don't really want a 53', but I thought I would ask what you guys thought. I know the customers I have now that say they need a 53' will load a 51', no problem. All input is welcome and appreciated!

    Mine's a 48 and I generaly have no trouble, since reefer freight is typicaly heavyer than dry goods. I've also loaded "53 footer" type loads - 28 skids, but they're all sideways. I think if I were to order a new spread axle reefer, I'd too go with a 50 1/2 ft, or a 51'. A new 51' Dane spread WILL weigh considerably less than your older stainless spread. You probably have the thicker guage SS than what the factory installs these days. A new '09 trailer with SS sides will weigh only like 400-500 pounds more than the white sided ones. However that SS will run about $7000 more than a white sided one. At least that's what it was last winter when metal prices were up there. Maybe today the SS is a little cheaper tho.

    I think you can build a new spread axle Dane, white sided w/SS front and doors, alum wheels, ect, for about $48,000 - $50,000, not counting the unit.

    I also agree a 53' spread just looks queer.

    Right even when they put fenders on them to make them look good it just makes you want to spit on them.

    The biggest reason for even going with a 51' is that one of my customers have jumped on the "we have to have a 53'" band wagon. I too have loaded 53' freight there, but they don't want the guys on the loading dock to have to work extra (poor babies)! I have received some specs and Winchester, you're right. That trailer spec'ed like I want it is about 2000 lbs lighter than what I have now, so that's the route I think I'm gonna go. As for selling my reefer, I'm asking $25,000.

    Let me ask a serious question here.... about loading this pig or any spread axle.

    What do you suggest a guy tell a shipper not familiar with loading spread axle trailers? I've been looking and looking and can't find anything regarding the best loading configuration for a spread axle trailer.

    Any and all suggestions would be much appreciated!
