lol i just finished reading that and was gonna post it here. My first thought was if there tired of it then they should raise there bridge height. Second thought was well they have a point maybe they should fine/jail these dumb ##### GPS is a tool it should never replace driver's common cents, we have truck Atlas road signs and clearence hights and web sites to help (NYCDOT - NYC Truck Routes )

So what enhanced gps units are they talking about? Are they going to build them themselves?
-
GPS units, Rand McNally Road Atlas, etc do not "cause" truckers to run into bridges. This reminds me of all the stories about the well known, wicked SUV's and how they are running around killing people.
I've never attempted to prove it, but I was told this story about when GPS was first coming onto the scene as Standard in some cars. The story I heard was about an older couple in Germany with a Mercedes driving along the Rhine River on a foggy night. Well, the story goes that they drove right into the river!
Ends up that the GPS gave them the right directions to get across, but just didn't mention that they needed to get on a Ferry!
No matter what the directional reference is, even "Billy Bob saying just go down yonder, turn left, go under the bridge and you're there", it is still the Driver's responsibility.

My 465t just took me down a road that had a 12'6" bridge on it. I didn't hit it. I read the sign and turned around. So much for that theory.

the pc miler co pilot that I use has messed up a few times.....but any driver that follows every suggestion a computer makes should not be driving
Working Class Patriot Thanks this. -
I was reading this the other day and just wonder how drivers don't look at bridges before they drive under them. You could give me all the directions you want but I am going to always verify the bridge height. I don't drive now but I have 24 foot box trucks before and always found my self watching the wires, trees, and bridges as I drove down an unfamiliar road.

even before gps units trucks were hitting bridges, i dont think its the gps thats making trucks hit the bridges, i think its the dum ### behind the wheel hitting the bridges!, i also think truck stops should stop selling these units, out of reach, out of mind, they sell the cheapst units, so easy for a moron to buy one, and trust his life with it!..... i thought we had eyes for a reason...

I would think it would be easier to just post signs saying "LOW BRIDGE" than to paying the expense to create new laws and get sued over them.
Why not dig out the ground underneath the bridges to increase the hight?
I have seen many bridges with no markings for height at all!
Why don't the GPS pmakers check all low bridges and continue to add them into their units so those who use them don't hit low bridges?
I guess suing and creating laws that cause other problems are much better? *NOT*
I hear Chicago is filled with low bridges all over the place!
