Anyone else feel like throwing up?

1. Spin try to look at the positive side here,(I assume)you're getting a new job so your family will be took care of while we're going thru the worst recession since the Great Depression.

2. Nothing is forever Spin,allow yourself a few months to get in the groove of this new career and than make up your mind if you want to keep doing this.With today's technology you can hunt another job while on the road.


3. 90% of the time your family will adapt before you will,been there done that.I never did OTR but worked construction away from home weeks or months at a time.
Keep it fun by sending the family plenty of Email,pictures,phone calls etc.
Make them feel like they're still part of your life and that you're not just running away.


Most of all keep us posted!!

 

I'm going to chime in here and put: Get the PCMI or PCMI Express air cards! It's more expensive to buy than the cheap POS USB card as it slides into the computer and is more secure. USB aircards screw up your USB ports on the laptop from all the vibrating and bouncing around while plugged in or being hit when moving the lap around on you lap! That is if your laptop has the PCMI slot! The initial cost is what will hurt but the monthly cost is the same!

BE SURE TO SPECIFY UNLIMITED USAGE! The cap of 5 gigs isn't enough to even pay for unless you have a ton of email! Go to your providers website and find the broadband usage chart you'll understand why! It's a laugh at what you DON'T get with a cap! I use mine to watch TV and entertain myself when not rolling and that 4 or 5 hours a month of video sucks!

It's like anything else you have to give it time. Fortunately these days its a lot easier to communicate with family at home. Good luck to you and hopefully you find it to be a rewarding and profitable career.

My dad was in the military and was gone a lot when I was young. Sometimes he was gone for only a few months, but often he was gone or six months to a year. This was long before cell phones and the Internet, and calling even when he could was very expensive. He would write us, and send us tapes (reel to reel). Growing up, I missed my dad a lot, I loved it when he was home with us, and I was always very proud of him. We knew when e was gone, it was because he was working so we cold have food, clothes and all. Now as an adult, I am even more proud of him and have a lot of admiration and respect for him for always providing for us.
I have a close friend who does not have the same feeling towards her father. He was unemployed a lot, and their family struggled to make ends meet.

I believe my father being gone made us a closer family, we didn't take each other for granted, when my dad was home we spent quality time together, and made me a stronger person. When I was young I wanted my dad to be proud of me when he got home, so I tried harder at school and in sports, I was also better behaved, I knew how much it meant to him and he always told me so.

Your kids will be okay, yes they will miss you, and you will miss them, but they will also be proud of you, for providing for them and because of what you do. Just remind them that the clothes they are wearing, their cell phone, ipod, laptop, the guitar their rock idol plays, or the football that Bret Farv throws and pretty much everything in their life was once on a truck.

 

don't forget postcards and email. get a supply of all kinds of funny cards at a CVS. every once in a while when one of the kids is getting down, send it. while cells and video cams are great, the memory of the conversations will eventually fade. something like a post card that a kid or wife! can hold and reread is priceless.

you'd be surprised how much people will open up about stuff that's bothering them in email versus in person. get each kid an account of their own (depending on their age) and think of it as quality one on one time with each. answering them will help you kill the time away too.
