I have decided to stay away from truck driving for the time being for several reasons but want to maintain (keep my CDL). What are the requirements for doing so... do I have to maintain a medical examiners certificate and if so, what other obligations are needed to maintain an up-to-date CDL? Thanks

I have been doing that. I think some of the rules depend on the state your in. Contact the state DMV office and ask - but for the most part, just keep renewing it. Hazmat (if you have it) can be costly now (thanks to the TSA requirements) but the basic CDL - just renews.
Here in WI, if you let your DOT med card expire, your restricted to in-state CMV use only but if your not driving CMV - it doesnt matter.
Just DONT let it go. Keep it. You never know and so what about the few extra bucks in the mean time

Check you local MVD. In AZ, if you let your medical expire, your CDL will be revoked.
Good Luck! -
If thats the case...just get the physical. After all, it's a good thing to have that done even if your not driving CMV...right ?

A word of warning: Stay out of a commercial vehicle too long and your CDL wont matter. You will have trucking companies requiring you to go school.

LOL! You are correct. I just went through this. I applied to about 200 companies before I found a company that will hire me. It was a small local company and I actually go out on my first run tonight.

Same here. Out of driving since 93. Need to attend school again before heading out. Either a private school or company school. Doesn't matter though, as after being out that long, one can always use training....

Triplesix is right,BUT. If you have a current CDL you don't have the hassle of going to DMV and taking all the tests. Plus the expense of getting a Class C DL upgraded.

In florida, if your med card expires, your license is still good-for non cdl vehicles.

I've been keeping my CDL renewed since 1997, although I haven't been employed as a professional driver since 2000. I simply go to an urgent care clinic and get a DOT physical every two years; the cost is usually around $75-$100.
Compare that to my driver license renewal, which is now $105 a pop (CDL + motorcycle + three endorsements) and required EVERY year so they can verify my immigration documents, and the DOT physical actually becomes the lesser expense.
Besides, I'm bad about going to the doctor, so I guess a physical every two years helps me make sure there's nothing major wrong with me.
