That would have to be chained to a seat or it would walk. Had an escort that was not hearing me, the walkie talkie, didnt sound to good either. She had a Uniden hand held and it worked good.

Why not just use the phone that everyone has?
Add a Bluetooth ear piece and it is all hands free.truckdriver31 Thanks this. -
The antenna is key... When I use my handheld with the little rubber antenna it came with I get very limited range, but when I hook the handheld up to my truck's mounted antenna I get pretty good (reception) range. I don't know or care how far it gets out, as I mostly just listen.
Handhelds are not as bad as this thread suggests.... if you've got a decent antenna.GettingRolling Thanks this. -
Thats what im looking for not so much of a talker but traffic stopped dead around the bend would be nice to know. If I could attach a handheld to the truck antenna I'd be happy if i know whats going on a mile ahead -
You do know it's been 8 years now since I last drive a CMV. If I was still active and was training I would very well be using a phone too.

HOLDING hand-held electronics in a vehicle may be illegal in some states. HAVING hand-held with you is not illegal

I am going to agree. Subpart H of 392 only mentions Texting and using mobile phones. If there is another rule about devices I am ignorant of it. I am not sure there is a real difference between using a handheld radio and a mike from a mounted one.

IIRC the number of button pushes involved in using it, that is ONE, is part of that equation as well.

If you only need to talk to each other look into handheld VHF radios. We use them in turns with super loads. Very clear, decent range and nobody steps on us.

I was more just looking to listen for updates on traffic and accidents in front of me thats about it
