After three years driving long haul I have decided to switch to a day cab position. What I am curious about is the differences in handling between the two. I asked the recruiter but obviously she did not have a clue. I have a road test next month and wanted to know what I need to be aware of. Thanks

Daycabs are a bit more noisy in the cab because there is nothing but a piece of glass behind the driver. That puece of glass lets you blind-side back almost as easily as sight-side back, if you can back. Most drivers cannot back except for pulling 3000 yards in front of a spot and backing into it over the next 30 minutes. The ride is a little rougher if the truck has 2 drive axles. If the truck has a single drive axle it rides like a paint shaker, especially when bobtail.gentleroger, terryg247, firemedic2816 and 2 others Thank this.

If you've been running a newer style conventional truck like a Cascada you're not going to notice a huge difference with the day cab. Little worse on the ride quality and better on turning radius. You will probably oversteer it backing up for the first week or so.

Don't forget your 5 gallon bucket and a king size pillow. Put bucket upside down between seats and pillow across. Now you have a sleeper.

Biggest thing if there is a significant reduction in wheelbase you will over steer when backing the trailer. The best part is, once you get used to it you'll back up like a super star.

Less room for lot lizards

Very little storage to keep a few extra items without filling the cab.
A rain suit, a few tools, bulbs etc. A change of clothes, might get caught in rain or covered in crap. Never know, its trucking.
Much more storage option with bunk.
And....when I see a day cab driver deserving irritation, I tell them day cab drivers aren't real truck drivers. Works every time!

Kiss your storage good bye. I bought one of those plastic 3 drawer storage container from Walmart and secured it between the seats. Not much loader but definitely a little rougher ride.
terryg247 Thanks this. -
Don’t get lazy with backing up. I know a guy who ran a little daycab with a flat bed trailer for a while. He always just looked out the back window when he backed up and now if he gets in a sleeper truck he about can’t back up.
I drove my first year in a daycab. It was a 01 FLD120 and that truck was a lot of fun to drive. It was a really clean little truck with a huge visor and lots of chicken lights. Still miss that little truck.terryg247 Thanks this. -
What I like is I get to sleep either in my own bed or a hotel!
No sleeping in smelly truckstops. A bed, TV, shower and usually a free breakfast in the morning!
WINNING!
