Thought the grass was greener

In this business, you as a driver must resist the temptation to "jump" based on the apparent color of the grass in another pasture. Don't believe 90% of the BS other drivers say when it comes down to their carriers. I have sit and listened to loudmouths brag about how good they have it with company XYZ knowing full well they are full of it. My point is PLEASE use caution.

This also reminds me of a conversation I had oh maybe 30 years ago with someone. He decided to dump his wife for some gal almost half his age. Then about a year later I spoke to him about "things". He bitterly regretted what he did. The girl cleaned his clock after also cleaning out his bank account. This guy was so broke I loaned him money to eat on. To this day his first wife won't give him the time of day.

One more point, most good-looking grass you see?? Most times it's Astroturf! By the time you see this, it's way way way too late!

 

I'm with you.. I find local work to be harder work. That's just me though. Some people dont mind paying the price of sleeping at home at night. While I do miss my family and battle bouts of loneliness, the payoff running OTR is much better for me. Sometimes drivers need to go with what works for their situation. Sometimes its local, sometimes its OTR. As a CDL holder, I'm definitely better suited for OTR. I think drivers, particularly inexperienced ones, try to much to follow narrative about OTR at times. They end up convincing themselves that OTR is not for them because of listening to others. There is nothing wrong with liking OTR better. I used to deal with a girl that said, "The grass ain't always greener on the other side. The grass maybe a little brown here, but at least there was grass. It may need a little watering." That was the only smart thing she ever said while I was dealing with her. Lol I couldn't turn that grass green even if I dumped the ocean on her lawn lol

 

local work is 100% dependent upon the area you’re in. It’s that simple. In my area, you’d be an absolute fool to go OTR!!! There’s so many easy local jobs paying as much as you feel like making (seriously, some guys make 80- other guys are well over 100 k per year, all depends if they feel like running) that the thought of OTR isn’t even a reality.

other areas, it’s the best option. Just like real estate- location location location.

 

The better question is where is that location. I know it isn't South Florida. I had two local jobs there. One I took home $650 avg per week and the other paid $900 per week gross. The latter job was hourly pay and if the overtime was flowing you made good money but that was running out your 70 each week to gross $1800. I can do $1800 now without bumping my 70 and I don't have a 1hr+ commute 6 days a week. Per diem pay also means I keep more of that $1800 doing otr vs local.

I’m local here in Kansas City and bring home 12 to 1400 a week hauling construction equipment. Never work over 50 hours a week and off on the weekends and holidays. This year I have 21 days vacation, so ther are good paying local jobs out there.

 

Kansas City is the place to be then. Which one though?.
