Hello! I'm new here and just have a few questions. My husband just got his TIP and is having a friend train him. He was in the Marine Corps reserves as a driver way back in 95-98 and drove refuelers, duece and a halves, Humvees, etc. Is this a good idea or should he go to a school? Also, he would really like more of a local, home every day kind of thing or at least home each week. (I know--a lot of people would)How the heck do you find something like that without experience. We are new to the whole trucking world and just trying to figure everything out. Help us! thanks in advance:biggrin_25525:

Hello there. While you can still get your license without going to a school, companies more than likely will not hire someone without schooling, since they have to do what their insurance tells them to do. Unfortunately military experience does not transfer into civilian life.

There are people who just drove locally and are trying to get back into driving over the road and are being told they need a refresher course, because in the eyes of insurance companies local driving does not count as driving a truck, which does not really make sense to me. Driving is driving. Well, except logging and hours of service that are different, but gosh, you can learn that without going back to school.

He may be able to get a local job doing things as dump truck driving, but considering winter is upon us, and Michigan's economy is in the toilet anyhow, that may be very difficult.

He could possibly check in with UPS, FedEx or the like to see about getting hired on the dock. They promote from within for driver positions. Either way good luck. It ain't easy right now.

Best bet for him is to attent to a trucking school. Most of your large trucking companies required that. Its also good change if he did get his cdl he would have to do otr(over the road) driving for at lease 6-12 months before he can get a local gig.Best bet is trucking school,no questions ask.Its great to know someone to train him but trucking companies are picky about that.Thats the first thing there going to ask anyway, where did you go to school. Also not sure but I have been told some states DOT required people to attent a school in order the get there licience but I dont know how true that is.

I'm also from Michigan(detroit area). He is going to have to go to school. I went to Trainco in Taylor Mi. I had a real good experience there. After school I went to Swift. I know alot of people talk alot of trash about them but I thought it wasn't to bad. I also was able to get home almost every weekend for the year I was there. As far as local jobs around Detroit it may be very hard with little to no experience.
