Hello and thank you for any help you can give.
I'm a transportation manager and we're sourcing a new facility in SoCal. I have reservations on if there's enough room to function at a facility our DC director likes. We need to keep some 40' ocean containers on site.
How much space would you need to pull out and/or back into a dock if hauling a 53 or a 40? Let's assume we could either have docks side by side (2-4' between) and/or only use every other dock, so 12-16' between each box.
The yard in question is 105' from dock to fence and some folks here think we can store 40' along the fence line...
Thank you for any help you can give.
Enough Space?

That sleeper cab with a 53' attached is about 70 feet long. How much room does your guys think is needed to back in and pull out of a dock space? Maybe they can demonstrate.
rored23 Thanks this. -
If you park the container up against the fence you're going to lose 8-9 feet so that pushing that to 96-97 feet. Let's say you have a long nose KW or Pete coming in with a 53' trailer that's closer to 80'. I pulling into a spot that is pretty close to that area you are considering & those long nose fight to put it in & pull out. The space between the docks is about 2-3 feet when a truck is in the next dock.rored23 Thanks this.

They are wrong. The drivers will stuggle with just the room you mention.
And your idea of using every other door will disappear as fast as a triple chocolate cake at a weight watchers meeting.
In fact, if there is an open door, with sleeper cab tractor trailers on the doors to either side, a sleeper cab tractor trailer will NOT be able to get into that open door.

This has maybe a few feet less than what you are talking about (53' times 2 about). I had to wait for one of the trucks to pull out before I could get on the open door between them. Just not enough room.
If you zoom in, you can see how that chain link fence gets bumped constantly.ibcalm19, rored23, GreenPete359 and 2 others Thank this. -
Bout this much. I'm 71ft and my wheels don't cut 90° like most of these newer trucks

i see your hard dock & raise you RLB in West Caldwell,NJ...
there is a brick retaining wall at the grass line across from the dock. Many hoods and bumpers have been lost in this place -
Just remember, if a 53' or for that matter a 40' chassis is in a door, you would need another 75' to get another 53' in the door next to it. Another matter is: how far is it between doors? That will also have an effect on trailer swing. If you are going to have a bunch of containers sitting around, parking them in front of doors is going to cause headaches unless the fence is far away.

Thank you all! I've been doing this for a hot minute, but I've never actually had to explain with such detail exactly why there wasn't enough space - usually they trust me since, I've been doing this a hot minute. I provided the below to them. The 2 orange rectangles represent a 40' with a cab. Double it and all the space is gone - and forget a 53. *sigh*
