Walmart sells Clear Ammonia. It's around $3 a quart. Mix a cup per gallon or so. I also have a spray bottle with washer fluid and ammonia. Spray some on, get the pumps going, squeegee it off. Squeaky clean windshield. If never had it freeze.
NOTHING cleans glass like ammonia. Nothing.

Keeping a good coat of Rainex on your windshield will make bug removal a lot easier. Downside is when you get one on those huge bugs splat right in front of you, you get to watch as the wind pushes it's innards around the windshield.truckdriver31, buddyd157, D.Tibbitt and 1 other person Thank this.

I use a few bottle caps of sunlight for bugs I add directly to gallon jug before I fill reservoir . In winter the blue washer fluid sold in Canada works well unless you go to a big box store and buy the cheapest available. At minus 15 unless you’re following pretty close to someone you use very little washer fluid. Today it’s minus 29 and I’ll use nothing .

Part of fall maintenance is removing the spray nozzles and running a fine wire thru the holes to clean up any deposits that will slow the flow.
Then for running in bitter cold temps, I leave the hose off the nozzles.
You will use more fluid but thats a small price to pay to be able to see.RockinChair, 650cat425, God prefers Diesels and 2 others Thank this. -

Alcohol and simple green are pretty harsh on the paint if used a lot. I’ve used simple green to remove the greasy fingerprints and road grime that leaves stains in the chalkiness that imron paint becomes after a few years in the Texas sun. It removes paint a little at a time. If you have a costly one of a kind custom paint job be careful with what liquids come in contact with it. Alcohol also will remove any wax protection on paint or aluminum.
Texas bugs get so bad in the summer ( running the coastal bend and valley is thick) that it’s best to not use the wipers until the glass can be soaked down real good in a rain first because they will only smear the bugs worse to were you can’t see and just rip up the rubber blades making them useless. Wait till you experience a Lovebug season where you literally have to pull over every five miles and clean because the windshield is solid black bugs. Last bad one I remember was around 2010. I have a picture somewhere. The front of truck and box was solid black 1/4 inch thick and the grille screen was plugged. Ran a bit hotter.
I know you’ve been here long enough to exterminate 10,000 Monarch butterflies per mile twice a year. Lol!
A always carried white polish type towels and a gallon of washer fluid or plain water. Soak a towel and wipe down by hand. Wash the towels and reuse when needed.RockinChair, D.Tibbitt, James j and 2 others Thank this. -
We once shard a yard & garden hose and squeegee with a few fuel haulers. They always dump diesel in the bucket that held the squeegee. They would use the water/disel mix to shine up the shiny parts of their trucks. The jerks never stuck around to see how contaminating the wash water turned cleaning a windshield into what looked like smearing the windshield with vaseline for the rest of us.JoeyJunk Thanks this.
