Thinking about buying a 2007 international tandem with a HD570 engine. Are these a good engines or do they have problems also how much HP do they have. Thanks Mike.

Assuming it’s pre-maxxforce main concerns are the ICP system and if the lifters have been double locked. EGR valves and turbo could be issues as well but a test drive could rule those out. Idle time compared to mileage doesn’t seem excessive at least.

    If it’s a maxxforce I’d walk.

I looked after a fleet of 14 plus internationals over 15 years.
The pre Maxxfarce engines were pretty trouble free.
Even the early Maxxfarce 10 engines that were single turbo and had
2 EGR coolers were fairly trouble free.
Could you post the last 8 of the VIN and I can look it up on Navistar's site as
I'm not familiar with the HD570 engine.

The lifter locks they are referring to are the metal brackets used to keep the roller lifters in line with the cam lobes. The brackets are shaped liked a double open ended wrench and it holds one lifter at each end. The failure is the brackets break due to age which will allow the lifter to rotate which causes the roller lifter to grind into the cam instead of rolling on it which destroys the lifter and camshaft. There is room to double these up to ensure a single failure doesn't cause any damage. This can be done during overhaul or when the head is removed. Failing lifter locks, or "dogbones" were more problematic with 2007 model Maxxforce engines. They still used single dogbones while the valve springs were changed and made stiffer so more strain was introduced to the valve train.
