Yes........"Fair Use" allows you to make one "archival" copy, but circumventing the "encryption" code is still a violation of Federal Law. That is how they make their own laws inconsequential.

The other software I use runs in the background and "unlocks" the dvds to allow them to be copied, it is anyDVD by Slysoft, it is about $60 bucks for the year and included monthly updates to the data and operating files. It makes the task of ripping DVDs onto hard drives (for personal use) mush easier.

This software, in fact that whole company's line of software, doesn't do anything that the free, open source programs mentioned earlier in the thread will do. To make matters worse, they won't just sell you their program, and hey, I understand wanting to get compensated for your work, but, no, they want you to SUBSCRIBE to their "service" so you can continue to use their software. This is why I never got into the World of Warcraft craze. You want me to shell out $40 for your box of CDs, then give you $20 a month to use it? Naaa! -
Has anyone had any trouble doing copying on Windows 7? I was about to upgrade and wondered if there were any hidden copy protections built in.

None that I've heard of and nothing that wouldn't have a workaround very soon anyway. You can't stop the signal, Mel.

I got W7 on my laptop and the outside buttons on the laptop do not work (volume, shortcut keys). But that's not a big deal. In case anyone is wondering it's a Vaio VGN-FE880E. The Sony website says that they do not support W7 on this model. But it works, just the buttons on the outside don't and the the built in webcam. I guess this should be a separate thread I'll start later.
Back to the point. I use DVDFab for ripping and haven't had any problems with it.
