This may sound like a dumb question to some or maybe all, but is alcohol based mouthwash allowed in big trucks? I was told by a driver that if you use it (as it is intended) you could test positive on a breathalizer therefore, it is not allowed in trucks. If this is true, I will be getting it out of the truck and buying non-alcohol based mouthwash.

When I was in trucking safety, we ran some tests. A recent mouth-wash would put a person's BAC WAY above legal limits, and so if you tell the officer that you just used mouthwash, he needs to give you some time to let it dissipate.
We waited 30 minutes, and then tried again. BAC showed well within limits by that time. We decided that if a driver wanted to wait a little longer, say... an hour, we'd go that far.
Anything beyond that is probably coming from within, and telling the officer you always swallow your mouthwash probably won't tickle his funnybone.

Yeah. Easier never to have to explain it in the first place, especially if the occifer is an authority-mad numbskull who'll just lock you up for that initial test. There are plenty of good non-alky 'washes out there nowadays.

And for the nit picking officer, just having the alcohol content mouthwash in your truck could be a problem. This was discussed on another alcohol thread.

no alcohol based mouthwash is not illegal in a truck or anywhere else as far as i no BUT you can abuse anything . if you use that type of mouthwash it will affect you BAC for a few minutes but will rapidly return to normal its not like booze .
however i suppose there are some that will try to get high on it , then that makes it illegal. use it properly and no problem but bear in mind cops including the DOT are not stupid they have been trained and most have the experience to no the difference.

    best of luck. southernpride:biggrin_25512:

alcohol based mouthwash DOES NOT show up on an intoxilzer test if you use as directed ( rinse then spit) an intoxilizer test is a test of air in the lungs not the mouth therefore as long as used as directed it would not show. as a former law enforcement officer i can say you will not test positive with an intoxilizer nor PBT

    Team Evans:
My ex BIL was a city cop and we wee sitting around at the "south office" one day (a convenience store and restaurant) when one of the other cops came in with his new breathalyzer.

We wanted to see how well it worked and I went out to the truck and got my Listerine and hit it pretty good and went back in and I blew a .09! By BIL was handed a bottle of alcohol from behind the counter and he huffed a few times on it and he blew a .6!
Yes, you can blow numbers with it still heavy in the mouth but it will dissipate in a few minutes. As one stated before and this coming from a cancer survivor there are alcohol free mouth washes out there that do just as good of a job as an alcohol based product and is much better for your mouth, not to mention your mental state from worrying if you'll get a DUI for having kissably fresh breath!

Now to those of you that think you'll get pulled over with in minutes of doing your daily maintenance, you REALLY need to get a grip! Is your karma that bad that you think you'll get a sobriety test that soon after brushing you teeth?

Now as to a law about having an alcohol based mouthwash in your truck. There is another thread dedicated to it BUT I believe back towards the end of the 90's and I don't remember when exactly but there actually was a law passed that made it to the books about not having ANY alcohol based products in the cab of the truck. The only alcohol based products could only be in the trailer and a documented legal load!

Drivers were actually getting tickets for having rubbing alcohol and mouthwashes in the cab until the ATA finally did something right for a change and pushed congress to get that rule changed!
It it not against the law now to have these products in the truck BUT I would caution you about ANY cold remedy or prescription with alcohol in it! That could get you into a bind! Read the label! Do Not Operate Heavy....or drive.... get the point?

I was always told "When in doubt, don't".

I used to use Tom's alcohol-free, but never cared for the taste.

Now, there's a bunch of products on the market that are sans alcohol (I used Crest Pro-Health myself).

I had an office co-worker who used alcohol-based mouthwash to hide her consumption of alcohol on the job. I'd say it's a bad idea to use it and keep it in the truck because of this and other concerns mentioned in this thread. There are non-alcohol mouthwashes available - check a health food store if you don't find it in your drug or grocery stores.
