So I'm ready to buy, got plenty of money saved up, got my letter of intent, got the truck picked out.
My question is, how do I get it? I'm buying an old truck (pre-dpf) and planning on fixing it up. I'll do a lot at home, but I want to get it to a shop I know several states away. Can I get a temp tag? Is bobtail insurance enough? Do I need it to pass DOT before I can drive it (not for hire)?
Anything else in missing? Thanks for looking!

Reading into it too much. Transfer the title when you buy it. Register it at the tags place. Call your insurance and tell them you want to just bring it home only. If it does not have a current up to date inspection on it in the state it currently sits, then you will need it inspected obviously. If its not been inspected than ill bet it will need a bunch of stuff. So Imo you be better off not dealing with all the hassle of insurance and inspection and just have someone with a lowboy go pick it up for you. Some of my information may be wrong. So dont give me a beating to hard guys

So you actually inspected the truck and do your due diligence?
tommymonza and AModelCat Thank this. -
Lol, my due diligence consisted of "I want this truck" and "I have the money to fix everything". I'm planning on dropping 20k in repair and modification.
I was thinking of renting a penske truck and one of those tow dollies, but if I can just drive it I don't have to deal with returning equipment. -
How far does it have to go to get it home?
A tow dolly for a class A?Last edited: Feb 16, 2021
Bean Jr. Thanks this. -
To move mine 170 miles over state lines but no weigh stations in route I purchased non trucking insurance from progressive since I did not have a DOT number.
I ran with no tag just a bill of sale and dated title and a paper log book.
I thoroughly crawled all over my old dog for hours before I bought it so I felt it could pass a roadside inspection if it had to.
Good brakes in adjustment with legal depth tires and no fluid or air leaks will cover most problems.Mattflat362, Bean Jr., Coffey and 2 others Thank this. -
ok, $20k lol ... ok ...
Penske won’t rent a truck to you unless you have an account with them and getting a tow dolly from them ... well they don’t rent out things like a pro-tote setup. Just go and get it. -
They make them, I have two and sold off my older ones. Pro-tote the brand I use now, $8400 each and no one rents them that I know.Coffey and tommymonza Thank this.
