I started to think about why the ATA is pushing Sleep Apnea like it's the next best thing to test for. As well all know that only 0.04% of large truck accidents come from being too tired to drive.
Then it hit me.
ATA has been trying every loophole in the book to haul more weight, larger trailers, more more more.
Sleep Apnea tests will not weed out bad drivers, but put a added strain on fat ones. If you are overweight, you are automatically put on the chopping block for being prone, but really, what the ATA wants is to get rid of a 350 pound driver and replace them with a lighter one.
That's my crazy theory, but think about it, I mean some of these ATA companies strip out a battery to shave a couple of pounds off a truck, do you really think they didn't sit down and plan out how to get rid of fat people?
Sleep apnea, is this being abused?

Sadly this makes some sense.

I believe it was on this board that I read there are groups that want drivers with too high a BMI medically disqualified for the sole reason of being too heavy!
I guess the next generation of drivers will look like a professional horse jockey. under 5' and less than 100 lbs! -
There are already some companies that will not hire a driver with a high BMI, Prime is one that i know of.
-
I dont think your theory holds water, why are companys adding
apu's and larger deep cycle batteries? If what you say is true,
companeys would go back to single sleeper c.o.e trks and run super singles, oh yeah no apu's or deep cycle batteries to run new hybrid heating and cooling systems. fat or thin I dont think any one wants to see that. thank goodness you were just dreaming! -
I will say this I just went through the sleep apnea test and now have a cpap machine. Honestly I feel better and really comitted
to my diet, yes my bmi is way high. 6ft 5in and down to 390 lbs
from 429 lbs. I have always been heavy, and been on many diets. So im not only losing weight to get healthy but also to keep my job! In reflection I think the sleep apnea testing is a good thing. -
1St off let me say that I dont have a dog in this fight. I have sleep apnea and I have had my machine since 1998. Yes my life has improved a great deal since accepting the diagnosis and needed treatment but what you must know is that the same people who test you for sleep apnea are the ones who are making money SELLING THE MACHINES! I forgot to mention that one of the members of the Medical Review Board (forgot his name) was a big muckity-muck amongst sleep study type people. The Medical Review Board is instrumental in getting standards passed for the DOT medical card.
What a coincidence that this person, who was a spokesperson for this industry, is pushing to have as many drivers as possible get tested for sleep apnea???
BTW, has anyone ever gone for testing and it was determined that they DIDNT NEED A MACHINE??? THINGS THAT MAKE YOU GO "Hmmm?"! -
truckerdave1970 I agree with ya, for three years same size and weight no problems. Then Bam company dr says iM a prime canidate for sleep apnea. I asked him what had changed since last physical? He said insurance companys are giving incentives to trucking company's if drivers are screened and checked for sleep apnea. The next thing Im sure will be body index mass!

But think about TEAMS, and my idea sounds a lot less crazy.
2x150 or 2x350. -
I see your point, but sleep apnea wont get rid of drivers. Unless that driver refuse's treatment. If your company has short term disability like mine does, that covers you while you get treatment to become complient. Then you go back to work, its a pain in the butt. Still working and doing what I enjoy. FYI insurance paid for everything and the machine. That is both mine and the wife's,
thank goodness for that!
