Im not gonna completely stay home and dispatch. I figured i could run local 3-4 loads a week and dispatch n manage the driver. Basically going from OTR, to local and have the driver supplement my income. If i pull $4000 a week net driving myself. I could pull $2000 doing local, and net $2000 from my driver. Yes those numbers can vary, but still a good income, and my belly and weight will thank me later.

If you made it work with one old truck, you can make it work with another. The hardest part is realizing you can’t drive both old trucks and wrench on them and make money. That’s what made me finally cave and buy a new plastic ##### Freightliner. I’ve spent the last four years running my ### off and working on an old truck in order to build a reliable business within my budget. I was getting burned out but had developed great relationships with my customers. The best solution for me was to quit wrenching so hard and buy newer equipment.

I would personally work on creating relationships with customers who make the local work more profitable for you. That way, whether you hire a driver or not, more money is left in your pocket at the end of the week. Then when you add a second or third truck, your reputation gets you the work you need.

I personally went from grossing $15-18k per month with my old truck to $26-29k on the same lane with the new truck. I just could never find enough hours in the day to make it all work otherwise.

Here’s the real kicker.. . I run within 200 miles of home in the northeast, drop and hook, mostly power only freight. This is why I would work on the customer base before jumping into another truck

So did you end up finding another driver for the other truck?

My current lanes aren’t bad at all. i think im getting lazier and lazier. I use to run HARD in the beginning as all O/O do. And now i got some saved up to grow the business. They say some people work for their money, and other people make their money work for them. I’m sorta at a point where i want to let the money work for me.

I’ve got a full time driver with 15 years experience in my newer truck, and a part time driver running the spare truck on the weekends to keep it from sitting and to give me a couple days off.

It took me about three months to find the right full time driver before pulling the trigger and hiring him. I’m happy I didn’t rush it and hire anyone else bc he is safe, cautious and takes good care of the truck. He’s motivated to make money and that’s what we’re both doing so far.

I don’t blame you for wanting to make your money work for you. I think we should all be looking for ways to maximize our profit while spending more time with our family. I’ve given up too much time with my kids to make a living. Now it’s time to make up for it.
