Yesterday, I was southbound on I-55 coming from I-355 going to Weber Rd, in chicagoland....a lot of guys on the CB were talking about a truck smoking really bad....at first i thought they were talking about from the stacks, but no, it was from the trailer tandems. And it went through the weigh station, with smoke rolling off the trailer tandems, and was not pulled in. WTF? How can that NOT be pulled in?

The driver finally pulled over right before the weber rd exit....since I was getting off anyway, I slowed down and made sure the tires weren't on fire, before I passed it. I would've attempted to offer assistance putting a fire out, but there wasn't one. :)

Just for the record, I know I've never been trained in this as a driver, but I used to work at a print shop, and this particular print shop had about 5 fires a year, and it seemed like one a year was bad enough to have fire trucks show up! Anyway, I was given hands-on fire extinguisher training there, heh. :)

That driver shouldv'e been pulled. The trailer brakes needed adjusting or were close to catching on fire for any number of reasons.

It is possible that the inspector was in the restroom there. You never know, because you cannot see in them.

As far as fire. If the tires were on fire, calling 911 is the only thing to do. Your extinguisher would not be effective.

I was rolling out the Eastbound Banning scale and the scalehouse worker, got into her car, and drove off, while leaving the open sign on. I looked inside and nobody was to be found....

    One thing to think about.

Most of these weigh stations are computerized. They are still weighing the trucks. But when they are not in there, they also could be monitoring the weights of trucks for future reference.

Such as the number of trucks, weight and etc.

Banning east bound is wired into the west bound scale house also, if you run it or your seriously over weight they will have someone contact you. You'll recognize them they drive the nice black & white.

They may have virtual weighs as well. Where the officer can be out on patrol and get an image sent to his laptop of the overweight vehicle. There is 100 reasons that it could be. I know if I'm in the scale working and a bypasser rides by, I'll pursue the vehicle and leave another inspector in the coop to run the scale. I'll be back in a few minutes and continue on. And your right they are all computerized now. The computer keeps track of everything so they could be doing a sampling as well. Hard to tell.
